<p>I continue to be gobsmacked at the ascending success of Swans, the loudest band in the universe. Never been in the Top 100 album chart, or anywhere close to it, yet their latest "To Be Kind" (<a data-ipb='nomediaparse' href='http://www.metacritic.com/feature/best-albums-of-2014-so-far'>currently rated the 2nd best album of 2014 so far at Metacritic</a>) recently made the Top 40 chart in USA and UK. Not bad for a 60-year-old noise-maker making 2-hour length albums with songs running in excess of 30 minutes.</p>

<p>(Coincidentally-or-not, the current best-rated album of 2014 is "St. Vincent" by St. Vincent, who sings on the new Swans record. I saw both of 'em play a double-bill a couple weeks ago. T'was awesome... and loud.)</p> -

<p>Strangely enough, their CBGB brethren <a data-ipb='nomediaparse' href='http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Heartbreakers'>The Heartbreakers</a> are getting there. Like the Ramones, they grew up in Queen's, NY at the same time. Johnny Thunders and Jerry Nolan are gone, and when Richard Hell expires they should investigate the plumbing.</p> -

<p>Found these guys while stumbling around a little while back and keep going back to youtube to listen to more of them. The are a plethora of 'retro' funk bands around in the US and Daptone have got a good thing going on as well in more of a Northern Soul style with Sharon Jones and Charles Barkley but I love way these guys have got that Alabama southern soul thang going. White boy, brought up in the church to be a preacher, ends up looking and moving like a spastic accountant but man can he sing. Tight band too. Add some keys and you'll be hearing F.A.M.E and Muscle Shoals all over again.</p>

<p>First clip is obviously a produced one but the second is even better being acoustic only with only a central mic.</p>
<p>I hope they get a record out soon as I'd buy it.</p>
