The Greegan sidestep gets a lot of love but my personal favourite would have to be just gassing the Boks in Pretoria (at 1:55). Just ridiculous.

By all rights he should have the all time AB record. Was possibly dudded a couple by the reduced squad on 1995 EOYT and during Mitch's reign. If Cully had the leash Savea got he would have hit 70+.

I dunno, Umaga stepping a cardboard cutout of Chester Williams just beforehand was pretty choice.

As someone with ACT in the name I'm unsure why you would include Larkham in this team? He was a fullback who converted to 10 not the other way around.

@rotated It's weird watching that footage now as defence seems optional, but I think it was a reflection of the pace and width those games were played at back then although both sides could leave defenders flat footed with steps and changes of direction.

Kahui at fullback, Fitzy on the wing.

And WTF was MacDonald doing at the end of that SA test? He needed to run the ball not force it for a drop-out.

I can't leave out JPR Williams - along with Cullen and Blanco the best 15's I've seen - who had probably the best defence of the lot

A close-call but Serge edges it for me. Christian Cullen is probably the best attacking player I've ever seen and one of my favourite ever players. Blanco scored 38 Test tries for France, still nearly 28 years after he retired a national record for France. Serge Blanco was the better all round Full back when you include defence, kicking and aerial skills and unlike Cullen performed in the World Cup knockouts for me the pinnacle for judging the best players.

Both were players from Wonderland. Blanco was at his best for a bit longer.

Cullen played 13 at the world cup. Hardly a fair comparison.

And a damn good fullback at that. I remember there was a fair bit of controversy when he was moved to 10 because he was considered such a good 15.

Yep, there were also few doubters about his abilities as a 10 too due to his seeming lack of kicking skills back then.

Isn't it hailed as a Macqueen master stroke but the reality is they had no one else at the time?

I recall it being the considered a massive risk. No one else had done the job properly. Flatley, Drahm and Edwards were wildly inconsistent. They'd even given Horan a go at 10. Knox (ACT) was probably the best Aus 10 in 1997, but wasn't selected until the final game.

Just thinking back, Larkham was a really farking good 15.

@sparky not sure the RWC was the 'pinnacle' until probably 1999, that said, even now I am not sold that you can judge players career on thier RWC performances.

Plenty of our great players never managed to win a RWC, but I dont judge them on that.

Blanco was a favorite of mine growing up, but I'm not ashamed to say that when Cully hit the scene, he was my fave player, up there with McCaw, BBBR. I worked in a sports shop at the time, and when suppliers gave us promotional stuff, the Cully stuff got the most prominant place in the store.

In thier respective eras, in thier positions, peerless, you could argue Blanco may have become a better player had he playe din the professional era, or Cully with all his natural talent would have been an even bigger 'freak' as an amateur.

I saw Cully on TV and live throughout his career. The guy was a physical freak and would have been great in any era

Couldn't agree more. Having him and Jonah playing at the same time was beyond awesome.

It was beyond criminal that the Canes could hitch a halfway decent pack and a quality 10 to those two. We were totally stacked in the backs then
