I don't get this role model argument. Why are people taking moral guidance from an athlete?

Yeah I hate that argument, they aren’t role models. A better way to say it is they are very influential due to their fame.

I see people are wondering if he did this on purpose to get out of his contract. Interesting timing now that he’s the top try scorer.

That was my thoughts . I doubt the French or Japanese really care what he thinks .

Is it really any different from him standing up in the office and announcing it. That shit will still get you fired.

Exactly. There are so many professions where people have to be so careful with what they say and would face exactly the same sort of sanctions, difference is most people aren't world class sportsmen.

Try being Police, Fire, Ambo or any sort of Government department, tweet that shit and try and keep your 40k a year job........

Essential if you work with key stakeholders/sponsors. I have it in my contract that I can't grandstand on social media on a number of issues or topics. I'm fine with that because I find grandstanding a waste of time plus I get paid a lot more money by agreeing not to do it.

An interesting angle here is that in NZs bill of rights, and I'm sure Aus has it in a human rights act, people are protected from discrimination based on their religious beliefs.

Firing a guy based on his religious beliefs fits that bill perfectly. So unless you have something specific in your contract you shouldn't be fired for quoting your holy book.

When it comes to Folau's contract, I'd be surprised if his lawyers didn't put any mitigating factors into it regarding his religious beliefs. It will be interesting to see if the ARU will be able to terminate it without paying him out.

We don't have a Rights Act. Religious freedom is the only freedom explicitly stated in the Constitution but that's limited to government restriction:

    Sect 116
The Commonwealth shall not make any law for establishing any religion, or for imposing any religious observance, or for prohibiting the free exercise of any religion, and no religious test shall be required as a qualification for any office or public trust under the Commonwealth.

They say things happen in threes, Folaus gone , Assange is arrested and Shane Jones could round out three pricks getting what’s coming to them as more evidence of his sleaze and corruption comes to light .

    Happy days .

I stand corrected, looks like there are Federal anti-discrimination laws but they don't cover religion like in NZ.

@No-Quarter That's correct. But the current government wants to amend the discrimination legislation to make relious observance a protected status.

It still boggles my mind that him and David Pocock shared a dressing room

I sincerely doubt the strength of Bono's stated convictions.

I don't think that's fair. He didn't sign the papers you see. Even if he went through the ceremony and she took his surname and he porked her. And his carbon footprint is small...compared to Al Gore. Jazz hands.

Folau targetted eight groups, including atheists and adulterers, as going to Hell. I haven’t repented yet. I guess that means I should be twice as outraged and incensed and offended as LGBTQers. Strangely I’m not feeling it. Fwiw there are plenty of Christians and Muslims who believe the same, but society only preaches tolerance and diversity, they don’t actually follow the practice.

It's not a competition. He tweeted his views on a subject his employer contractually forbid him from tweeting on. He got fired. Stupid is as stupid does
