Who needs Charlie Ngatai when Akira Ioane is around.

Yup, and as a massive bonus Akira is actually the best player in NZ in his position.

Despite the fact every 6/8 in NZ got picked ahead of him last year ?

That's certainly a good talking point, I wonder if it has been discussed on here?

Hold the phone. Anyone mentioned James Marshall? He's a very good player and did a good job at 10 for the Canes. Just coming back from injury though.

@Rancid-Schnitzel I had totally forgotten about him (in this context)! I think everyone, including the media, did, due to him being away for years and then injured. If he can stay fit, he might actually be the best option we have!

Wait and see how he comes back from injury. Maybe Marshall being named on the bench instead of starting at 15, isn't so bad after all (I'm referring to my comment in the Sunwolves v Hurricanes thread).

    @Rancid-Schnitzel

James Marshall signed for London Irish as a Ten, but was mostly used as a fullback. He has played club Rugby in Japan as well. If fit and in form, he is potentially a RWC bolter.

So if height counts against a potential 1st 5 guess we can count Savea out.
Im leaning towards SBW mainly to just see the NZ public react and also to see rattue and reason write articles praising the decision because it goes against what everyone else is thinking*.

My next pick (hear me out) is BBBR. My reasoning.

    1. He's the man
    2. He has a hell of a dummy on him.
    3. Safe under the highball
    4. He has enough 'auto 3 points' on the man of the match rankings on here that we won't be able to complain about him.
    • I wont read the articles

@canefan did, maybe on another thread, but yeah if he can get upto speed it'd be great. How much time will he have at 10 with BB on the team? Not much, my guess.

Not much but BB was injured a couple of times and I recall Marshall doing a pretty sound job. He's just a really good player (or at least was) and IMHO wouldn't look out of place in black. The same can't be said for most on that list.

@Rancid-Schnitzel If it's about experience, I'd pick Mitch Hunt who has about the same number of NPC and SR caps as Banks. The only difference in experience between the two is Banks' overseas' stints for very average clubs. Hunt has played in two SR Finals (2017 & 2018), Banks in one (2015).

Yeah I could live with Hunt. He has been in some pressure cooker situations.

I'm still bemused he wasn't called up instead of Cameron last year - or was he injured (old man memory)?

    Mitch was available for selection.

I think it was pretty much a "long term promise" pick with Cameron. Mitch is pretty small - even for a first five and I don't think he's ever shown much sign of being really world class. Has a turn of speed, but doesn't have the same elusiveness as DMac.

Wouldn't be the worst pick in a RWC crisis.

It is so interesting with Mackenzie out. Surely 2011 won’t happen again and BB and RM can run ship..,.
As always the balance of squad will be taken into acc IMO. JB will be 4th option but would be surprised if 3rd if others two stay healthy before cup.
Not sure if I want any other option running ship really.

@Nepia Yeah - I missed his game against the tahs, but I saw the next cameo with his penalty touchfinder.

Not ready for the ABs yet!

Will Jordan can probably play 10 though! 🙂

Jordie is the my choice. You can joke about the charge downs but at the end of the day he has the quality and skills to fit in and do a decent job rather than hinder the players around him. He made a decent fist of his chances in black so far. And that us about all you can ask for if you get to the third stringer

I don't think the charge downs would be a joke - they'd be the number one thing I would target.

There's a reason most first fives are nippy little guys whose feet are close to their hands - because those extra hundredths of seconds it takes someone with long levers like Jordie - who is 20cm taller than people like DC and Mo'unga - to catch, drop and kick the ball are critical. And it's in the bio-mechanics of everything they do - they've got more power, but they take more time.

Henry Honiball, Stephen Larkham, Jonathan Sexton, Steven Donald and Jordies shorter but still quite tall brother Beauden are reading this and getting pissed off at it's inaccuracy.

tallest of that lot (Larkham) is still 6cm shorter than JB...

Don't always believe stats, Honiball is a tall rangy bloke.

I'm 6' 2" and Honiball was taller than me when I met him

I agree with all that. I would definitely have selected Mitch Hunt over Brett Cameron for the Japan test last year. Mitch has shown, in both 2017 and 2018, that when Mo'unga was injured for extended spells he could come straight into the team and run things smoothly. He's a good all round player, whose kicking and passing games would be on par with Cameron. However he offers much more in attack with ball in hand. I agree with you that he's really small but I think as an emergency call-up, none of the other young 10's in the country have shown as much at Super Rugby level as Mitch Hunt has.

Just want someone who's solid, isn't over-awed and doesn't go to pieces. That could be someone out of position from the current squad or a specialist with some solid S15 experience - e.g Otere Black.

Either way, any option needs some experience at 10 in the AB's pre- RWC games.
