Is anyone using the doorbell camera system? Like https://en-uk.ring.com I imagine NZ have same or similar.
I've been interested in getting Ring for a while but not really sure how much of a deterrent they even are to potential burglars?? Any burglars on here that would like to chime in - now's a good time?
Any other tried and tested ideas for home security in general? -
I have Ring and also some fixed wiring cameras.
I'm no security expert but I did head up security for a large business association over here and had a lot to do with security companies and the police. No (affordable) home security system will deter a determined professional thief, so it's all about target hardening - effectively having better security than your neighbours so they knock off their place instead.
As such cameras are a good option but there's loads you can do even before that. In NZ theres Selecta DNA (Dutch compayt so must be in UK) to identify your valuables so that they are hard to fence. Even if you don't do it make sure you have the stickers up on yr windows. Thieves hate light so some really bright motion activated floodlights will deter most. Just common sense if you're out the back of your property make sure the front is secure - many thefts are opportunistic run in and out grabbing shit. Don't post pics of your overseas holiday until yr back home. Get the cab to the airport to pick you up two doors down etc

I have a cheap set of Arlo wireless cameras, they record to a free online site (Netgear provided, as long as you only have 5 or less cameras 1TB free). I've put signs up everywhere, so really a deterrent of opportunistic thieves, lots of those out in coastal communities. Easy as to set up and apps on phone, can set all sorts of alarms and notifications, timings etc.

Amateurs.. our family just got one of these mean ferocious bastards. Our looks exactly like this bad bugger. I pity the fool who tries to rob us.

We are ok too, someone silly enough to enter without permission will come across our Indie..

But I got a Camera off Wish...is always good to know when your house is about to be robbed by a Moth! Had to turn the motion sensor sensitivity down a bit.
Is a decent camera though, I can rotate it about 270 degrees, up and down about 60 degrees over Wifi, I had to buy a Micro SD for it, but it does what I needed it for (which was originally to see if it was my neighbours cat coming in at night to steal my cats food)

@Baron-Silas-Greenback he sounds the business though, so if people dont see him, they think he is bigger...plus, ours is at bloody doggy day care most days anyway

to be honest if the intruder bought a handful of dog crackers with him she wouldnt do a thing except lick him to death...

@dogmeat is right, it is all about making your house harder than your neighbour's to break into. If someone wants to get into your average home, they will.
While we all like privacy in our back yards, thieves do too. If the neighbours can't see you in your back yard they can't see someone breaking in either. Live next door to a walking path or parkland? Thieves will be looking at your house so make sure you have security better than old matey next door.
Don't leave car keys in easy to find places. Cars are getting harder to steal, so the grubs are now breaking into your house, grabbing the car keys and driving off in your car.
Never, ever leave your garage door open, even when you are home. Make sure all doors are locked, even when home.
Have a safe, preferably one that is bolted to the floor for your valuables. Remember to put jewellery in the safe, thieves love jewellery because they can sell it on and it is easily concealable while they are moving around the streets.

I think I definitely might start with the Ring and see how it goes. Weirdly never thought of putting cameras INSIDE the house, but I know I'd be worried I'd end up with some Paranormal Activity type footage and have to sell up.Re: Dogs. I do have a vicious sounding Labrador but he's a wuss, I actually think he would be all play if an intruder broke in. A neighbour's cars were broken into one night last year so I put those "beware of the dog" signs on our gates as a deterrent but blatant false advertising .
I don't want to hate on my dog (that could be a topic itself as he's such a pain) but my family had German Shepherds growing up and the older one in particular was very protective of the house and garden, great soft family dog but a lot of people were scared of him, and especially the two of them together.

Cars are what I'm particularly worried about, my husband is just so relaxed about his much nicer newer vehicle whereas I put a steering lock on mine religiously as it just makes it more of a job for someone. I would hate for someone to steal my car.

@RLx31 hate to burst your bubble, but I'm a nuffie and broke through a steering wheel lock in less than a minute. Seriously easy to do.
Kill switch hidden in the car would be way way more effective
