Amazing how things change. I’m a “natural fat bastard” so have to work consistently to prevent from blowing out.

Everything I’ve ever been taught states fasting is a no no. That it puts your body in starvation mode and hence stores whatever you subsequently eat.

What’s changed and how does this work?

Short version that after 12 hours you switch over to burning stored energy instead from food. The longer you stay like that the more fat you burn.

You still eat every day, just in a set window. So fast for 16, eat in the remaining 8.

And there is no such thing as starvation mode.

Does it work if in that 4 hour window you'll mainly be sitting at your desk doing jack shit? Or does the 4 hour window have to be at a set time? As my weekdays are pretty routine with dinner all sorted by 7pm, and at my desk around 7am. So I'd basically be looking for breaking it at 11am, but with vast majority of that 7-11am on my arse.

I think it's the anabolic window or some such shit. basically 16 hours in which to burn fat, luckily half of that involves being asleep.

    it definitely works.

It takes 12 hours to deplete the glycogen in your system and start burning fat. So 16 hours is 4 of fat burning. That’s why I bumped it to 20 to get more time in that zone.

You’ll be interested to know that you get a massive increase in human growth hormone at 24hrs of fasting (can be as much as 2000%). So if you schedule it right (breaking your fast for a post workout meal two hours after working out) it helps with muscle growth.

@MajorRage can be whenever suits your schedule. And I’m proof it works by sitting at a desk, and I’m not exercising except weekend bush walks.

....and if you're strict with time the odd takeaway and beer drinking sessions doesnt hinder things either. I indulged in heaps over the xmas break but still kept my binges in the 'window' on the whole and didn't bloat over summer like it's so easy to do.

So, if I do my hiking workout at 4pm Sunday then eat at 5.30pm I should stop eating after dinner Saturday at 5.30pm? Interesting.

And considering I have DOMS for 2-3 days after the workout, I should eat normally (with meat at every meal) MTW. Last meat 8pm. Wed.
Then Thursday don't eat breakfast, break the fast at 12ish- lunch.
    Same for Fri and Sat?

    cheers

Fell off the wagon in a big way and have joined true-love on her "starvation diet"

I've seen you guys mention it a few times. My eating period is between Midday and 8 pm at this stage.

Massive change in how I think and I find that it makes me eat smaller portions when it is time to eat which surprises me.

@Hooroo a couple of black coffees in the morning can be hugely successful in taking the edge of any hunger (real or imagined lol). From memory the fat burning kicks in after hour 12 or so of the fast. I find that's a really good motivator for not wanting to get to 11 or so hours then fold and have something to eat.

Hopefully it also helps you dodge those late evening snacks too. That's been one of the biggest behaviour changes for me.

You got this bro, stick at it and give yourself time to bed it in as a BAU habit!

I knew you would reply with some good advice and I do appreciate it.

I hear you around the Black coffee. I try and limit myself to three a day (99% of the time, all in the morning)

I also hear you around snacks and have pretty much banished them from work place and home. Just making sure that the food on hand that I have to eat is good wholesome food even if a bit naughty like when I am having a small lunch, I have cheese and apple together.

Only day I don’t do this ‘diet’ is Saturday cos I’m at my folks and Mum cooks a big fry up. Fuck waiting til 12 for that !

Best thing about it is you get to eat more or else exactly what you want and it’s very beer/wine friendly ( within reason )

I’m typing this as I sip my first black coffee of the day

Milk and sugar have calories I guess.

Same, I don’t touch lattes or cappuccinos

I used to have a long black/Americano with a splash of milk for years but recently cut out the splash. Never had sugar with coffee so that was easy.

@Hooroo Calories break the fast, so it has to be black (no sugar or milk). Another tip is drink a lot of water, they stops some of the hunger pains. After two weeks you won't notice the time at all.

On the whole this is true but every now and again it’s a battle to get to 12.

@Hooroo ha ha us food lovers need to stick together bro!! Presume you are both using an app to track your fasts? I like the game aspect of it 🙂 the reminders don't hurt either!

I've found with the fasting that I tend to eat a bit healthier. But even if I do have a sausage roll I don't beat myself up as I'm pretty much always in deficit in addition to the fasting. I know I'll try and do better on that front when I get to my target weight range.

@MN5 Basically if you are starving, I just eat. It's not supposed to be torture 🙂

Another tip is to start at 12 hours, then add an hour per day to get up to 16. Less of a sharp shock to the system.

Same here, the busier I am at work the easier it is. I've never got so much done trying to forget I'm hungry. Been doing more housework too!

Well theres a big difference between legitimately starving and feeling like a big feed. I've always been in the latter category !

    @MN5

Do any of you train in the morning? Can't see how I'd ever last until 12. I've usually had 3 meals by then. Respect your willpower though and this thing seems to be having good results.
