I've no doubt that you can set up windows 8.1 to be entirely reasonable - but the default settings are of an "I know best" arrogant bastard who I don't want to work with as much as smack in the face.
 
Overall, it reflects my view of the popular rumour that Microsoft hires the best hackers to develop their programmes. If true, the people developing Microsoft software are people high on my list of fuckers deserving slow and painful execution - if I ever meet an MS employee I'm inclined to smack him or her in the face on suspicion! :)

So go fuck yourself, personally I want to punch the retarded spastics who think that developing enterprise level systems and OP's that cater for the vast majority of corporate systems ... whilst keeping them secure is some sort of easy task. Microsoft don't have the luxury of Android and Apple of knowing that hackers just generally just cannot bothered hacking them... juicier and more rewarding targets abound.
 
Generally the usual suspects who whine and bitch about Microsoft products are Apple and Android fan boys who just dont have the first fucking clue.. and dont even realise they are fan boys, yet still seem to think that Google and Apple are little boutique companies fighting against the big baddies.
Microsoft has hacker challenges that Apple and Android will likely never face, mainly as the systems they run are actually worth hacking.
 
Android is particularly bad, anyone that defends Android as either safe or reliable.. let alone easily upgradeable... is a twat. Android is cheap... Android might rationally considered to be simple to operate by some... but safe and reliable.. no way.
I like Apple as company, even own shares in them, they are genius.. not so much at technology.. but the marketing is genius. 
 
I currently write Apps for all 3 platforms at once... using Xamarin forms. And without any doubt in my mind the best is Windows phone.. except some glaring holes around blue tooth and some other stuff. But in ease of development, stability of platform and general common sense.. it is MILES ahead. Then Apple.. and Android.. well fuck Android.. (I do like Intents though.. tidy).
 
As for security... Windows again is waaaaaaaay ahead. Android is to open, Apple is to closed.. and you need to be a clever bastard to figure how to change that. Windows.... not so much.
 
I am not sure what will happen in the next 3-5 years.. but I think Unified apps of Windows 10 is potentially a game changer. Add the fact that those universal apps will not only run on Phones, Tablets, Xbox and PC's and Hololens .. and also potentially easily port over Android and Apple Apps... this could be massive. And that ignores dev companies like Xamarin that make writing apps for Windows, Apple and Android at the same time.. and things might change.. and change fast.
 
Currently it is the supply of Wndows phones in NZ that is the issue, my company wanted to use them, we couldn't get enough high spec ones, so went with an Android version, the telco's just don't push them at all.
 
Surface 3 has already made significant corporate inroads. It is a beauty.

Windows 10 seems good so far. Upgraded my home PC from 8.1 but I hardly do anything on it, mainly just used as a media server at the moment. Quicker and definitely easier to use, start menu looks good. 
As an aside, had my first go with a windows phone yesterday...could they make it any less intuitive? What a fucking nightmare to use or try change any simple configuration.

Not intuitive? Meaning you have used a previous phone and after one day with a different phone you don't know it as well as the one you had for years?
After using all 3 brands to a quite in depth level, I think they are all pretty intuitive. Takes time with all of them, especially if you are swapping smartphone for smartphone.

Microsoft's push for Windows 10 could be the missing link for their mobile suite. But they're way behind at this point so it will need to be a compelling argument. 
I've been a supporter of Windows since XP, excluding the abortion that was Vista. 
The vendor whose API product we're using all have Macbooks. I asked why not a single one of them had Windows: "couldn't get the tools we need to work" so I set about proving them wrong. Then i took the time to show off the features and software I had access to under Windows, that no one would bother developing for Apple.

Now seriously - what the fuck is it with Microsoft? They release software that does EXACTLY the same fucking thing - but, they rename the commands and hide them in different fucking places - and claim that's a revolution. It is just a monopoly exercising their c*ntishness. So fuck them.
 
I do not give a flying fuck about Apple and Android - I have neither - especially after I lost my phone in Singapore Airport last week.
 
I am someone who has to run my own business using Microsoft software and every time they change it they are sabotaging me for minor gains to me but to maximise their own profit. 
 
Yes - I can doubtless run all of them - but, it's costing me money - at both ends.

Nah meaning all I wanted to do was figure out why WhatsApp wasn't notifying and turn that on. What a nightmare process.

Windows 10 has been good. I preferred 7, and downgraded from 8 to use it as my daily driver.
 
This has the best bits of 7 and 8, and incredibly the required specs to run is the same as 7. That is a serious achievement, and means there is no reason not to upgrade, even if your computers is 6/7 years old. 
 
The upgrade was painless (its best to wait until it prompts you to upgrade, that means your PC is less likely to have issues). Only thing I had to re-install was some work related software. 
 
Now that's windows as a service, it's worth getting the free upgrade (you have a year) and getting improvements as they come out. Last "big" release of windows.

Sorry what list? You mean the upgrade matrix they are using to stagger the release? 
I don't think that is documented, but I've found the backwards compatibility is great. I had to reinstall the JRE I was using to get an eclipse based tool working properly. 
But really, I just want to talk to my computer:)

That kind of list - thanks. I only have a few things poking around that are either windows-native (SourceTree, Sublime) or ridiculously not Windows (maven, ant, git)
 
Anyway I tried to run the install but it hung on the "preparing" bit :mocking: so I'll give it another crack shortly. 2.7Gb is a little hefty for my poor old third-world DSL2.

Yeah only definitive error I've seen listed is from a WIn7 upgrader - he said it got stuck somewhere but once he changed Locale to USA it was all good in his case.
 
If it goes smoothly with my near-new Win 8.1 notebook I'll consider updating the little netbook I bought 3 years ago as well. It runs 64-bit Win 7 and its clunky. If that's good, the wife's machine is next.

Boxing weight divisions are fucked in developed countries as people have got bigger. If you fine down a little bit you can fight as a light heavyweight - I'm a super middleweight (with a large burger and fries I'll be light heavyweight), but with a reach advantage and, according to Tim, allowed a zimmer-frame to whack you with and then an "Uh, uh, uh...you can't hit old people..." :)

Standard windows with no colour on them shits me - hard to tell quickly which one has focus, which is especially troublesome in a multi-screen environment.

Also once you've upgraded, make sure Windows Update runs and then get onto your device providers and make sure all their shit is up to date.
 
For some reason the Intel graphics drivers didn't come through on Windows Update so I had to go get them from Intel website directly after a couple of BSODs
