    Continuing in the same theme

    https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/crime/114615933/marcel-sydney-geros-convicted-of-trying-to-kidnap-jogger-on-christchurch-street

    This a new thing?

Judge Neave began the sentencing by saying, "I don't know what to do, to be honest." A cultural report showed Geros had come from an unfortunate background and had needed to "deal with more things than most people could even contemplate".

@Rembrandt That is sad and all, but the guy is a serious repeat offender. He needs to be brought to account for his actions

@canefan A serious violent offender. That article pissed me off so bad. I think mainly because it felt like the outcome wasn't victim-focused at all. She almost seemed incidental to everything. Never mind that she's been traumatised by that sack of shit, as long as we make it nice for the offender.

Everyone has choices. Like not bashing senior citizens half to death. Or stealing shit from ambulances. Or attempting to kidnap women at knifepoint.

The point of that article was that if he had put hom in jail he'd have been out in a month or two. So he took the opportunity to keep him under supervision for longer. Seems sensible to me.

@booboo why didn’t he just give the scrote a longer sentence? Don’t judges have any discretion? It wasn’t his first violent offence so guidelines would be just that only. Jail. For a while.

@booboo as someone in his position, surely he has the power to ensure that doesnt happen and make an example of someone and potentially alter the way society acts (and perceives our justice system as soft) hardly a deterrent to the other scumbags out there.

Looking at him his surname I’m reminded of the “ bummer of a birthmark” far side cartoon

Repeat offenders for violent crime should have the damn book thrown at them..and then doubled if you have a face tatt.

Is there an argument for maybe commandeering one of our offshore islands as maybe a bit of a 'mini-Australia' and give cretins like this an option 10 years prison or banishment to 'The Island'

Have been listening to a bit on the price of crime and how the cost of keeping a repeat offender out of prison from a financial perspective is significantly more than it is by locking them up. Longer sentence needed and thrown on the discard pile in prison for my mind.

@jegga I’m glad I didn’t have to tell her. Look at the biceps on her. That’s not so much a tattoo as a mural.

I’d love to know what these failing media organisations are paying the likes of H Barr.
It’s almost as if our media platforms all producing vapid content mostly out of step with the country is a terrible business model
