Am I heartless for thinking the Tremain cartoon in the ODT isn't that bad?

Political cartoons are to make you think, not make you laugh. To my mind this makes you think "how did this happen?". Maybe I'm just a heartless fuck. But my daughter is vaccinated.

The artist called it a light hearted joke in the article you posted so he may disagree with you here.

    Two things:

    1. That puts a different perspective on it
    2. Knowing that would require me to actually read the article (was only looking for an image of the offending cartoon ... )

Just want to point out some people seem more upset by the cartoon than the deaths...

Tells us everything about the veracity and worth of their concern.

I hope the company he’s slandering sue if there is nothing wrong with them . He such an insufferable dishonest cretin, no wonder he and John Campbell are close .

Its funny we live in a world where a limerick about trans identity, a movie review that goes against the grain or support of a US president can get you banned off of social media..yet this cretin is totally fine to pedal literal death.

This is from someone in Samoa on planet rugby who works in the health system there

    Malo Uso.

As previously stated, this whole event can be traced back to 2 incidents last year.

    1. A young 1yr old samoan girl who died shortly after receiving her immunizations mid 2018. She was medi-vacd to NZ but passed away. However, her death was attributed to a genetic condition that was precipitated by the vaccine. It is one of the rarest genetic conditions to have. However, this information was not freely distributed to the general public... so this was the first stone that paved the way in the general public not trusting vaccines.

    2. Perhaps a month later after the first incident, two young children die in savaii island, AT the same hospital, ON the same day immediately after receiving vaccines. What made the incident suspicious was the children just stopped breathing.. No rashes etc.. Again the public went to panic mode blaming the vaccine. Vaccines, specially Measles (MMR) were suspended. However, it has been widely known since LAST year that the deaths were due to malpractice. The nurses mixed up the vials and had given an anti-breathing drug (we use this to intubate patients). Again this has been known by the hospital for MONTHs. Yet they did not freely distribute this info to the public. So when the MMR vaccinations restarted low key middle of 2019, most of the public chose not to get it. In fact only about 60% of the general public has had MMR vaccines prior to the outbreak.

Next is the hopelessness of the MoH. Too much ego, power hungry guys at the top with personal vendettas.

When the first measles cases started popping up in NZ.. People asked our Director general (DG) of health at the time, what will Samoa do about this (since there are about 3 flights a DAY between Samoa and NZ)... His reply... Measles will never reach us in Samoa.

Our first suspected measles cases started popping up in September this year... You know how management chose to handle the situation? Our DG and Asst DG all decided to go to New York and Africa for conferences. Even our minister of health went to some functions in Australia. They did nothing.

From Sept to Oct, suspected measles cases were piling into the hospital... Our paeds unit have been yelling for weeks that the numbers were going up. During our Drs conferences we have been asking when a state of emergency would be called.. Sick kids being admitted...We got confirmed blood results in October. Yet our management refused to acknowledge it.... First deaths were in the final week of Oct. So from perhaps Oct 25th (the suspected first death) till Mid Nov, we had a further 12 deaths. That was when they decided to call the state of emergency and the mass vaccinations and all these other measures.
So from October to now... 62 deaths so far. Im pretty sure by the end of today that number will again be closer to 70.

I myself was a bit lax in my understanding and underestimating of how deadly measles is (since its almost treated as a passing paragraph in our textbooks). I had my first encounters with the disease on the front line during the first week of Nov (the week before they called a State of Emergency).... My gawd.. It is not a disease to be underestimated. Every second child who presented was literally looking like they were dying right in front of you, so they had to be admitted... But there was no where to put them.. So just lined them up in the corridors... Mothers on the floor with the baby in arms and IV drips.. It was crazy...Scenes straight out of a slum.. And through it all, i was wondering.. Where the hell are our leaders??? Are they not seeing this shite?

Also, for anti-vaxers.. They should all fly out here to see the effects of this disease on children. But no doubt they will attribute it to some other cause. Such as the vaccine itself. Bah im tired of the bullshit.

    @winger?

@jegga The parents of the two children who tragically died from a mistake by the 2 nurses were on TV this week urging everyone to get vaccinated.

@booboo I was a little surprised this didn't get a little more attention on the fern TBH. However, as a knee jerk reactionist, I am trying to contain my displeasure at this cartoon and the paper that published it.

We're all adults here and I like to think there aren't a terrible amount of snowflakes among our ranks and I do not consider myself one of them either. But this is some cold-blooded, ugly shit. They can hide behind "We meant the government, not the victims" bs and "we meant no harm" but its a nasty little comic that should not exist let alone be published. Thankfully my family in Samoa have not been affected but I know plenty of people with extended family members in the islands who have contracted measles and are shitting themselves.

You can look at it as Tremain lampooning uppity kiwis whose travel plans have been inconvenienced. But are there really enough readers out there that would get that and be like "oh what a cleaver take on rich NZers who enjoy traveling to Samoa"?

I don't think you could say it was a blatant sideswipe at the Samoan government either,

Here's what it is. It's an assault on people who will not read this paper and will not see the cartoon. Made from the safety of their far south offices where they do not have to deal with the sadness and tragedy this situation, a lack of education and resources, has brought about. And where perhaps a few like-minded(but surprisingly quiet) individuals may find some humour in others misfortune.

I know its not really on topic, my little rant, but fuck ODT and Tremain.

@raznomore I see today Tremain has previous with a cartoon published referencing Louise Nicholas' sexual assault with a police baton.

He really is a fucking moron. I don't think theres much "un" in his conscious bias.

Firstly to be clear - I think that cartoon was naive, horrible, stupid and some seriously introverted thinking was applied in order to write, and subsequently publish, it.

But it seems quite a few are peddling the "racist" line. And that actually annoys me just as much. It's many many things, of which none are positive, but it ain't racist.

@MajorRage I think for a lot of people throwing that around, racism, probably lack the understanding to differentiate between extreme arrogance and not racism.

I like your description that it was introverted. That’s exactly what it is. There was a thinking there that this wouldn’t get that far and it catered to a very small readership.

In the article you can search for your suburb to check what the vaccine refusal rate for under-fives is.

@Bovidae good on the community trying to get rates up. Sad they had to suffer the loss of that 7 year old girl to spur them to do it
