Couldn't find an old thread for this, probably tied up with a Savea one.

With the rugby season over and the cricket season not worth talking about currently I've been thinking are we likely to see Howlett's record (49) get beat in the next couple years? For a while there it looked like Rockocoko (46) would cruise it, then Savea (46) and up until the World cup you'd say Reiko (24) had a pretty good chance at it.

Aside from 22yo Reiko the only current back closeish is 28yo Beauden with 36 tries in 83 games. I guess a lot will depend on his new contract with a potential sabbatical clause but surely another WC cycle is likely and his ability to play both flyhalf and fullback he'd be a pretty big shout.

I'd also be interested in seeing how younger brother Jordie (11 tries in 17 games) might start to go with his versatility in the future, showed some good signs in the WC, would be great to see him as a high-ball weapon in the next few years.

Dougie's record is all the more amazing when you consider Joe and Jules. I recall thinking at the time that Joe was a dead set certainty to smash 50 tries, but all of a sudden they dried up. Jules was the same. That sort of longevity and strike rate is obviously very difficult to achieve.

@antipodean Yep nothing beats flat out acceleration and speed which does seem to diminish with age sadly, so you've got to get the tries in while you can. Beudie is 28 but still seems to have it and long may it last.

I chased the dog up the driveway the other day, she is 1yo, I am a lot more. She was doing over 32kph and I couldn't keep up. So there's your proof, age will get them all eventually - just when...

Would have been interesting to see where Reiko would have wound up this year trywise if he had played the Argentina match and been benched for the Perth debacle. Bridge ran in 7 tries in his spot, and in a supposedly poor year for Reiko he still managed 9 tries for the poor performing Blues.

He would have been sitting pretty for a tilt at the record in the next couple of years but instead it seems like his wing days are already over.

@Nepia dunno, you would hope a new coaching team will see some changes in ideas, some clean slates...

IIRC wasn't it Hansen who had to force the issue with Foster over selecting Reiko for the ABs during the Lions series?

@Nepia no idea...but who knows what truly goes on in their meetings.

As I said, hopefully clean sheet, new coaches, some new players, some new (better) attitudes.

If BB stays fit he should break the record, if he plays until next WC cycle that is what 40-50 games and has a 43% strike rate so will do it in a canter. But as we all know, form and injury can stop that really quick.

Perhaps we would’ve just seen more running into contact, and space not being used....
