U19 Cricket World Cup

This is going on at the moment.
NZ got off to a ropey start when their game against total minnows, Japan, got washed out and they had to share the points (India beat Japan and batted less than 5 overs (17 minutes) to do it!).
However, we scraped home against Sri Lanka, who have also lost to the Indians - so India and us play tonight to determine who qualifies first and second from our group.
But what I really want to note is that I watched a bit of England vs Australia last night. Both teams have lost to West Indies so the loser is going home. England did well to get through to 252. And then they'd reduced Australia to 213/8 after 47 overs.
40 runs needed off 18 balls and batsmen 9&10 at the crease. Game over, right?
But it's the fucking 'Stralyins!
Some fucker, called Sully, faces the England opening bowler in the next over and the Morse code reads dot dot dash dash dash dash.
(0,0,6,6,4,6).
Oz wins on the last ball - British Airways pick up some early business.

Quarterfinal match-ups:
Australia and India - heavyweight bout that might have been expected to be the final, but the Windies threw a spanner in the works.
Windies vs NZ - Windies are perhaps the form team having beaten both Oz and England, but they have shown a bit of top order fragility.
Bangladesh vs South Africa - Home team got badly beaten by Afghanistan, but qualified from a soft looking group. Bangladesh qualified top ahead of Pakistan because the match between the two was washed out - with Pakistan looking well on top.
Afghanistan vs Pakistan - Both teams won two games easily and had a washout. Possibly the two best teams from their rain affected groups.

Not likely mate there is a Hugh amount of players here in Australia with Kiwi parentage but they are keen to stay in the more powerful Australian system, Cricket Australia make a lot of money.Rookie contracts are handed out to all u/19 players and some identified u/17 players the State systems I have a young player who is 16 I coach he has a contact already, so they are paid to ward of AFL who target the big tall young athletes.
Cricket here is a big business. -

From the little I've read, they like the look of Adithya Ashok - an Indian legspinner. He's only 16 so eligible for another go at the U19s, but did well vs Sri Lanka.
He did well in the crunch match vs Sri Lanka...and you can see guys who scored runs.

@Chris Doesn't surprise me - but we pick up the odd one who sees more chance of playing international cricket for NZ.
In many ways it's a wonder we're even remotely competitive with India and Oz given their vastly greater resources - players and cash!

NZ do very well considering Its like Fiji competing against the AB's with money,population and resources being miles apart.
I have coached in India a wee bit with a link to the Hyderabad Academy thats even a great level than Australia but held back by corruption within the system. -

I am a little cynical after the Aussie tour.
I would say this is possibly our weakest U19s squad since ... I dont know certainly since at least 2006 as 2008 is far back as I can remember.
More balanced than our last tournament though, which had good batting but really weak bowling .
But , of these guys - the 2 spinners Ashok and Tashkoff, plus Wheeler-Greenall (both his batting and spun) look promising.
This team will struggle for top order runs and or early wickets, by the looks.

Actually, giving it more thought. Our 2014 team were also weak. So I may be rubbishing them too much.
Our 2016 team was fantastic, on paper, almost rivalling the 2008 alumni of Kane, Southee, Boult, Corey. But flopped big time and didn't even make the cup draw.
So, just need 3 or 4 good players per cycle. Problem is how few bowlers have been in our recent good 3 or 4 players.

Interesting to compare the two innings. The west Indies went from 183/3 to 238 all out in 47.5. We batted 49.4 and recovered from 67/4 to 148/5 before falling to 153/8.
