MIdway - watched this over the weekend, was a good film, while I expect there was plenty for them to work with without needing to get all U.S.A, U.S.A, I assume there was still a bit of dramatic licence used.
i'm dubious because there is already a good Midway movie

1917
Excellent movie, 100% recommendation. Took the olds while I was back in Aotearoa and my normally uncontrollable parents were glued to the screen. I tell ya it is usually like taking toddlers to the movies. Popcorn everywhere, faux whispers, and a slightly deaf mother screaming "What" every 5 minutes, makes for an experience.
Anyway back to the movie - No overt flag waving, focus on the two individuals and some great cameo's. Real suspense and a few yeeeeessss moments. The single shot approach didn't detract at all and felt very personal.

Ok, so I've now watched all the Oscar Best Movie nominees. Here's my ranking of them from best to worst:
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood: Tarantino on top form, great performances by Pitt and Leo and a typically bonkers and great ending. The stuff that some critics considered indulgent (the western tv show) was some of the best bits of the entire movie for me - I actually think people who didn't think they should be included missed the point.
Jojo Rabbit: Not sure why some critics hate this movie, critics are dicks, I rate this up with Boy and Hunt for the Wilderpeople.
Parasite: This lived up to the hype. I was worried I wouldn't after reading about it for so long. I had no idea where it was going.
Marriage Story: Good movie, good performances, hard to say it was enjoyable though but definitely a well crafted movie.
Little Women: The best version of Little Women. A movie about the ladies that most men are happy to admit they enjoyed.
The Irishman: Good Scorcese, but not great Scorcese. My rating of it probably helped by the fact I enjoyed it and Silence bored me to death.
1917: Thought I really liked it when I first left the cinema, but the scripting and a few unnecessary scenes take away from the great fake single take cinematography.
Joker/Ford V Ferrari: I liked both these movie but don’t think they have any business being on this list. Joker is well made Scorcese-lite (it's really just an amalgamation of Taxi Driver and the King of Comedy, which I think the director freely admits) which benefited from the ‘controversary’ surrounding it. Ford V Ferrari is just a well made movie with good performances and a decent story.
Should have been there but wasn't:
Knives Out: This would rival Once Upon as the best movie I saw last year. Great performances. Ana De Armas was great in this (setting aside her hottness) and Daniel Craig was hilarious (so much so that I'm looking forward to this new franchise from him after I've been bored of Bond after the last couple). But all the cast were good and it was a simple whodunnit done really well. -

So the harshest critics were right then. Good to know.
Damn.
You best stick to your 80s "classsics".

Yep . Really impressed with the two kids in it though .
The next movie that has Waititis name attached to it I won’t bother to watch until it shows up in my Netflix or Amazon feed.

You'll love it when you secretly watch it on Netflix in a years time. (Actually, probably three months time with the way they turn around movies these days).

Never seen Tama tu. Not one of those makes me think “ that was awesome, I’ll rewatch it tonight “. I’m not saying they are complete garbage though.
Actually Wilderpeople fucked me off , one of the major subplots of the book was that Uncle Hec was always giving the kid shit about being fat, then they went bush and the kid didn’t notice he was thin tll he had a shower and there was a whole thing about how he thought fat looked worse on brown people than white people. Then he realised Hec never told him he was skinny he just stopped giving him shit about being fat and how cool things were going to be now everyone saw him as skinny now.
By the end of the film Riki Baker was still fat as fuck despite living in the bush for months .
I notice that you didn’t list the comedy show he had on tv , that turd made melody rules look like Curb your enthusiasm.

I didn't list any TV shows - just movies (and short movies). What TV show are you referring to? What We Do In The Shadows? The wellington one? Flight of the Conchords?
I was never a huge fan of Crump's writing so really didn't care what was/wasn't included.
I'd happily rewatch all of those tonight bar 6-8, although if they were the only options I wouldn't mind.

Radiradirah was a horrible show. But he got better and I love Taika's work. It's not for everyone much like Wes Anderson isn't for everyone.
I forgot the name . It excruciatingly bad . Spinoff tv bad .

I'm taking your word on 'Little Women', adding it to our holiday catalogue (god bless Oscar season). As anyone in a relationship knows you have to take the occasional movie bullet to keep the other half happy. Best it be a bullet recommended on the fern. Review to come.
