It’s the one major area the govt has failed, happy with everything else they have done. The lock down included. But has felt they could have stoped more cases from getting out
and if we do stamp this out inside NZ, then it's the most critical way to stop further infection
-
@Virgil yeah it is frustrating, but then has been the case since they started the 'self isolation' a few weeks back, then supposedly tighter restrictions a few days later, plenty of stories circulating that it was too lax...
being as isolated as we are, strict protocols at the border should have been our first and foremost weapon in fighting this.
Although, I guess you could argue, that since these seemingly underwhelming restrictions, the numbers have shown that it has slowed the spread....
I know our tourism industry would take a hit, but shutting our borders to any non-essential travel would surely be the best approach?
-
What the fuck is the govt doing?? Zero point in this lock down and the economic carnage that has happened if they leave the borders weak.

@taniwharugby said in Coronavirus - New Zealand:
I think if the world borders remain tight for a sustained period, most of the tourist dollars NZers spent outside NZ will end up being spent in NZ, one reason many dont holiday here is the cost, so if the industry wants to get back on it's feet, appealing to the average NZer that would typically go to Fiji, Gold Coast, Bali etc is going to be key.
I'm already considering where in NZ to take the family in the Winter holidays now that all planned overseas trips are canned. I think the NZ tourist industry is set to have a strong middle and second half of the year because I suspect I'm not alone

I've just been listening to the live stream.
The testing criteria blows my mind. They raised the specific case of someone with C19 symptoms, and tests positive. The wife who lives with them doesn't qualify for a C19 test What The Actual Fark??? How the hell do we know where C19 is in the community if we're not testing people who could have been exposed to this?
My mind is blown. Hopefully someone can correct or update me, as this just doesn't make any sense to me at all
-
@nzzp I was in Sydney for the cricket with some mates. Came back early on the Sunday to avoid being isolated (didn't matter; that changed three days later anyway and I had to isolate). On the Friday I went to my GP because I felt a bit shit, and was told I wasn't Covid-19 symptomatic so didn't need a test but I did have an ear and throat infection, and was given a prescription. A week later one of my mates was also feeling under the weather, didn't believe he was symptomatic but goes to see his GP and immediately gets sent for a test. How does that work??
-
apparently Northland Police have had to set up a check point on SH1 south of Whangarei to turn back people trying to head north (from Auckland) for Easter
-
@taniwharugby the secession has started!

Was it the journalists who raised the issue that the wife was told she didn't qualify for a test?
Surely whomever from the government was fronting the press conference assured them that she was?
Otherwise it's no surprise that you get these anecdotal stories, because there are no shortage of clowns who fuck things up spread throughout every strata of the community.
The great problem is when you have an intersection of two clowns and the virus.

Journalists raised that the wife of someone with C19 didn't get a test.
Dr Bloomfield confirmed that is the case. No testing is being carried out on anyone who is asymptomatic.
Like I said, mind blown -- we don't appear to be testing anyone who isn't presenting with symptoms.
-
@nzzp That surprises the hell out of me, as well.
So when that guy is given the all clear and is "recovered" - both he and his wife will be in the clear to go to the supermarket - even though there's a fair probability she's going to have contracted it at some time during their self isolation - even if not yet showing symptoms?
Surely they aren't that silly?
-
@nzzp Not quite accurate. He said that at the time protocols were followed but this did not include testing those who weren't close contacts or sympotomatic. Nevertheless all staff and students were isolated as soon as the cluster was identified. Under new protocols anyone with CV symptoms will be tested and from now even those with no symptoms will be tested if they have been in contact with a cluster.
-
@shark goes different GP's will interpret things differently or even wilfully massage the protocols. My GP manipulated the results to get me on lipids before I should have qualified.
They indicated that after we come out of lockdown the border will be strengthened. Very strong implication this will mean quarantine.

They've increased the testing scope/criteria since that first death

So you did actually run the stupid old bastard over?
freezer a bit empty?
Far from it. I did some panic "buying".

I was tested with pretty mild symptoms, mainly because my wife is a health worker. They have a lot of descretion the testing place it seems. Since they have never hit the full amount of tests they can do a day, seems to me they should just test whoever rocks up until that's not true anymore.
More data points right?

I would totally encourage tourist spots to offer a 'local' discount. Last year went on a cruise around NZ and stopped off in plenty of touristy places. Treaty house offered this discount and it was great. Cool museum, good show, nice cafe, very professional. But near the end of cruise stopped in Napier, went to the aquarium. Same price as discounted treaty house cost per person, except it was shabby, a section was under repair, and our whole group was through in very quick time. That felt like a rip off.

Was thinking about you earlier, wondering how your test results went and whether it was appropriate to ask! Assume all good?
-
@voodoo yep, both me and the wife tested negative. Both had very mild symptoms, but as I'm in the high risk group I went along as well. If the wife was positive then it would have shut down her workplace so she had to be tested as well.
They have great PPE equipment now, sourced by her employer.
We were both in strict isolation while we waited for the results, they tell you to assume you are positive.
