Not only did they skip that, but his buckles weren't tight, his mask and helmet didn't fit, and he had never expressed any intention to get into a fighter jet. When the Gs started, he grabbed the handle to hold on ... and the rest as they say is history.
Amusingly (or worryingly), both seats are meant to eject. The pilot's didn't, so he landed knowing that he was sitting on a misfired explosive unit. Scary stuff, a comedy of errors.
