I'm missing a cafe in Christchurch which I (and others) believe has by far the best cheese scone around. We talk it up to customers and then when we take them there it simply never disappoints. I won't say where it is just yet as I'm curious to see if any other Cantab posters are familiar with it and call it out.

So those of you who know their way around a cheese scone; where is the best that you know of? Preferably in Australasia 🙂

@shark they are a thing in Wellington, too.

The best description I've heard for good ones is the dough is basically a delivery mechanism for cheese 🙂

Personal preference: needs a decent kick - some cayenne or somethign in it to sharpen up the flavour

My favourite cafe in Sydney is called the Sconery, they do really good scones (although I've never tried there cheese ones) but I hardly ever have them as I'm usually eating off their normal brunch menu.

If I liked scones the way I liked donuts I'd eat theirs all the time.

I disappointed if they didn't with a name like that.

For ages I hadn't had their scones and people would ask me about them. Luckily they did live uo to their name.

@nzzp Yep cayenne is essential in my book and The Grain does them beautifully. Cheesy, spicy and they toast them and serve them with copious amounts of butter. Gah.

@nzzp the previous owners of Goldmine (on Willis St) did a cheese scone with bacon and jalapeno - holy shit it was good. Then the guy moved on and the cafe has gone waaaay downhill.

They're very good and only 10mins walk from Syd law school.

So great for people that are A. Students and B. Lawyers. Life is so unfair.

@Catogrande he's just boasting on the fitness thread about never having done a hammy too. The world just gets worse.

Probably true. Lawyers have to be flexible. They have a commonality with Pelicans. They can both stick their bills up their arse.

Like there's any left after all the law students have cleared the shelves during Happy Hour.

You really shouldn't do that, there's this bug going around. A plate is more hygienic.

And the fern has been reduced to a thread about scones...Don't get me wrong I like scones, but it is unlikely to stir up the passion (read "one eyed vitriol") that a thread on the latest red card does for example.

But what if they are Hammett's scones?
