Where is all the talk about not needing to go so hard compared to Oz now? They are now more restricted than us and although they have done well they haven't cleared the spread up enough to go back to normal life. It was always said that the hard and horrible tactic would see us coming back out quickly.
They've basically wound up in teh same place - 6 new cases yesterday, and without the massive lockdown. I think lockdown was a good call, but the critique is always how quickly we can come out of it, and the damage done in the mean time.
I disagree that they are in the same place. They are headed there but are still getting community transmissions at low numbers. That means that loosening up runs a risk of another outbreak.
It has been a fallacy all along that Oz didn't take the same 'hit' that we did as far as business goes. The restrictions may have looked better on paper but the reality was that people weren't going out and spending anyway. They still had the same hit as us in tourism for example.
Their current restrictions (State by State) are quite strict.
As you say the proof is in how quickly we can get back to a reasonably 'normal' state where (some industries aside) people are going about their usual business, going to work, buying lunches, spending in shops etc.My point really was that anywhere that we look in a 'better' position lifestyle wise by comparison with others is a plus to Labour.
NB: shifted this to the Coronavirus thread but it started as a post in the NZ Politics one. (much crossover)

I went and had a look, but couldn't see much on the source of infection. Do you know of any decent sources?
This (https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-03-17/coronavirus-cases-data-reveals-how-covid-19-spreads-in-australia/12060704?nw=0#sourceofinfection) seemed to suggest that from May 13-20 (the last week of data), there were no new community spread cases (unknowns static at 713). The week before still had a fair bit of unknown though, with about 25 cases with 'unknown' source through the week.
I know data depends on how you look at it, but if they aren't where we are, they seemed pretty close. Keen to see if there is data I don't know about though.

This is the big unknown that every country is going through. How safe is 'pretty close' if you don't know the source. The hard NZ approach was to get to a position where we could feel comfortable that any new cases were from known origins and further spread could be shut down.
With 'pretty close' you have unknowns out there that could cause a resurgence.I'm not having a crack at Oz at all though. They have also done a pretty good job. But the longer they have to hold more restrictions than us the better we (and therefore the current Govt approach) looks to voters. They will feel that correct decisions were made and that gives confidence.

The new case is in the St Margaret's cluster and has been in isolation since the start of level 4. 8 weeks... Dang...
so what does that mean, they were supposedly infected 8 weeks back, and are still infectious now?

Don't know, the press release doesn't say much and there's no press conference till Monday. Scary thought though that 8 weeks isn't enough.

another day, another 0...27 active cases and 1 in HOspital, not in ICU.
So is that 2 new cases in the past week?
I wonder what 'normal' flu numbers are like currently (I realise we arent in full flu season yet)

1 new case in past 7 days isn't it?

I went to a mall yesterday and it was packed. You'd think if it were still in the community at all it'd be spiking under level 2 by now.

IOS and Android were updated today with their joint API to support contact tracing. So I guess since the app was already available, that means they aren’t using this API?
Hard pass from me then.
I'm no app developer but I really can't see why this tracing thing is so difficult when they aren't trying anything complicated or new.
Apps like Strava or Trailforks or Skitracks have become pretty battery efficient and something for this purpose only needs to ping a coordinate every 5 minutes or so. Elevation data can also be removed and speed calls aren't required. A stripped down GPS locator on your phone that stores data which automatically deletes after say 21 days would provide people with the ability to provide tracking data if they tested positive. Also, as per the proposed update to the current one, an file can be sent periodically to have cross checked against potential contact. It could be done anonymously as well. The current QR code thing is a mess.
I'd be happy to turn on my tracker when I leave home, let it store my data and periodically check against a contact list.

From the media release:NZ COVID Tracer app
The NZ COVID Tracer app has now recorded 380,000 registrations – that’s an increase of 17,000 since 5pm on Sunday.
We continue to encourage as many people as possible to download the app – it will help us identify, trace, test and isolate any cases of COVID-19.
The Ministry is also very supportive of the work done by businesses to get their unique QR codes up and running, with 13,600 posters having been created as of midday.
If people are having issues with the app, we want to know so we can get the problems fixed.
The Ministry website has lots of FAQs about the app, and you can report issues by freephone or email.
To reinforce on privacy:
-
personal information and contact details provided through the app will only be used to get in touch if an individual is identified as a close contact of a COVID-19 case
-
information about the locations individuals choose to record is stored securely on their phone and is not shared with contact tracers unless an individual chooses to do so.
In either case, the personal information shared with the Ministry is held for public health purposes only and will never be used for enforcement.

At first I couldn't be bothered with the Tracer App but after a night in Auckland, it would be handy to have rather than having to sign in and out of bars and restaurants.
We had intended to go to Wellington for long weekend, but pulled pin on that this morning. Had we gone, I would have definitely got the app.
