The problem as I see it is that the hybridised rules would have to be so dramatic that any advantage rugby would have playing rugby would be non existent.

There would be no powered scrums, and probably no lineout.

It would be a penalty fest at the breakdown as the leaguies just wouldn't know how to approach it.

Any hybridisation just renders the whole thing meaningless. A bit like the Gaelic-Australian Borefest.

40mins each half with each other's rules, and no pushing in the scrums. Then the rugby team has the ruck and lineout advantages at least.

I would watch that in a heartbeat. I think the Rugby guys would towelled at League and vice versa. I think you would have to only allow Rolling mauls for 1 or two metres though as the league guys would be stuffed. You could prolly maul it from your own deadball line

Fuck 'em. They crap on about how fit you have to be to jog backwards a little.

I think even I would find it rather tedious watching the ball kicked off to the 5 meter marker and then a maul to other end of park, rinse and repeat for 40 mins.

No doubt, hardly likely to happen though is it?

Then again, people watch hit up, hit up, hit up, hit up, hit up, kick for 80mins, so you may be right.

    This is fun 🙂

I think if League went first and say, hypothetically, put 40 points on AB's then we would see the maul to try to kick off to maul to try until score parity was reached.

If Rugby was played first there'd be about three rucks until the league players learnt to get off the tackled player quicker. Then it would turn into a farce as they refused to contest anything.

At least you could fulfil Eddie's wet dream of playing no props and replacing them with flankers.

Agreed. If you change the rules to suit RL then this becomes a big waste of time. It would be like saying no kicking on the last tackle for the RL half.

No one has mentioned that the article is saying this game would be 14-a-side. I'm not sure which position would be removed. No.8?

Prop if there aren't scrums. And I'd play another flanker as the other prop too.

Surely you have no props and no hooker? Even the locks you'd ditch given no line outs.

So now you have a pack of 7 or 8 blokes, all of pretty much the same height and weight. Starting to sound a lot like league...

So all of a sudden you're not playing rugby and you run extra flankers at prop.

    Not for me.

They may as well just play league if they go with these hybrid laws. It's close enough to league and as far away from actual rugby as you can get.

@Nepia itd be the safer option than getting leagues to scrum/maul/lift in line outs.

Which then makes it a bit of a waste of time as the kangaroos should dominate

In an alternate universe, the ABs should hire Craig Bellamy for one training a week from now until the match is played and have a proper tilt at the Kangaroos.

@ACT-Crusader Robinson as well. They were a great team to watch back then.

    Yep. Scott Quinnell as well.

Quinnell returned not went to union

Sure did. Went for the league money and came back to Union when money was on the table.

Just thinking about this, if this ends up being basically League and the All Blacks win comfortably, isn't that a complete disaster for that sport?

Rugby has the "out" that it's not really Rugby if they make too many changes.

A bit like Leeds Rhino's in the early-2000's. A must-watch when they were playing

We hadn't even mentioned the likes of Ellery Hanley, Dennis Betts and Shaun Edwards. Not to mention Dean Bell.

    Garry Schofield, Gary Connolly

@MiketheSnow Connolly yes, but Schofield was never a Wigan player. Plenty of others at Wigan from that decade like Andy Gregory, Offiah, the Iro brothers, Inga and Botica.

The Tigers would've win a GF if the Black Pearl hadn't been taken out off the play. To add insult to injury they made Lamb a coach.

I know, when Sinfield was mentioned earlier I threw out class players of that time.
