Until recently, it was believed that the artist was the only donor, and the buyer wasn't a donor.
... which was used as a means of keeping donations hidden. NZF, Nats, Labour - all doing it. I suspect the Greens and ACT are just smaller and so haven't been pinged yet.
Sunlight is a great disinfectant. I have no issue with people donating to political parties, but checks and balances mean it's important that is transparent.
Everyone does this it appears, including the most open, most transparent Government that New Zealand has ever had

@Godder so much for being holier than the rest
Not sure what you're on about, we don't know what the actual issue is as the SFO haven't confirmed anything yet.

Until the Electoral Commission provided updated guidance on auctions of donated goods, everyone was doing it and believed it was legal.
As one of the many electorate treasurers in the Labour Party (I completed the 2017 electorate return and have also done multiple local government election returns), the rules on campaign finance are arcane, and even top lawyers can disagree on how to apply the rules.
The rules still allow quite large anonymous donations (I've never seen anything more than coins in the collection jar personally, but have heard stories of donors banking money via direct deposit at a branch or into smart ATMs), so reducing those limits is a major step in that sunlight.
In terms of transparency, and vaguely adequate governance, Labour incorporated this year (they've been working on it for years, quite an involved process for a political party because of all the history and stakeholders), so will be filing annual financial returns at the Societies Office from now on. The Nats haven't bothered, and NZ First has their Foundation hiding assets, so at least Labour and the Greens have that.

After years of dedicated service national leader muller is finally stepping down.

@Billy-Tell That didn't last long.

Always seemed poor timing when he took Simon's seat to have a crack at Cindy, esp for someone that lacked her charisma and appeal. Thought he was on a hiding to nothing and would fall after the election, how wrong was I!
So who takes the chalice now? One of the girls surely?

@taniwharugby Soimon? He's got support within the caucus. Large rump were never happy he was rolled. He can say he's ready which is something no one else can.
No one with any long term ambition would want it surely.
Can Collins resist. You pricks may hate me but I've more balls than the lot of you....
Mitchell's put his hand up before
Really Nats are suffering for rolling English. He would have steadied things held Labour to account and organised a clean transition to a new leader mid 2019.

Did he get rolled or step down? Must be hard to continue mentally after getting 44% and having Winston pick the other lot

Comedy from the National Party. Reminds me of Aussie type politics.

@nzzp rolled. His plan was to oversee a smooth transition to a new leader mid term.
I'm sure he felt gutted after leading National to a stunning election night result but as a loyal party man was prepared to do the right thing. Once it was clear others weren't as loyal and were working to undermine him he was quite happy(?) to pull the plug.
-
Holy shit. Poor guy, I think he had a very limited understanding on how leadership post Siomen would go. I reckon he had to come in and knock it out of the park immediately and his early wobbles weren't a good sign. Then things got worse with the leaks and MPs like Paula leaving, while Collins continues grinning in the background. Snake pit!
But I do hope he and his family are ok - it's a tough gig for sure.

Chewed up by the media after issues caused by his own colleagues (good one Hamish and Michelle).
I said after his first speech that he didn't appear a natural thinker on the feet and that has given the ferals in the press the toe in the door to pressure him into making mistakes.
I do have to say though, his tenure was strange in that he came in on a promise to show the country how National would be a better option for recovery but dished up zilch. Was just Bridges 2.0 without the lisp. Kept telling Labour that they should do something about something but no indication of what the Nats would do in their place.
If the Nats now vote in Kaye they are definitely doomed. She can't keep her feet out of her mouth and her sour expression isn't the most marketable going.
EDIT: bit slow there. Kaye it is.
EDIT Again: Get it right! Kaye just acting leader until a further caucus meeting
Maybe she will find some non-maori maori and some chinese koreans for her shadow cabinet. -
I just saw what he said, man you gotta give Winny his props, he has both praised Muller and stuck a couple of knives into National there.
8:55am - New Zealand First leader Winston Peters has sent his sympathies to Muller and his family.
"Todd is a good man, unlike most of his colleagues he does have commercial experience, and he will bounce back.
"Leading a divided and incompetent caucus would have tested even the best leader. The National caucus now has the unenviable job of selecting its fourth leader since the Coalition Government took office.
"The National caucus, like too many parties in parliament, lacks business experience, life experience and political experience. Heaven only knows who will be the next cab off the ranks selected to lead such a dispirited and incompetent lot."
Peters said Muller "never had a chance given the fault lines of ambition, personality, and ideology that run deep through the National Party caucus".
"National has demonstrated to voters as clearly as it is able that it cannot govern itself.
"During a time of crisis, when stability and real experience is what the country needs from its politicians and their parties, National's instability and hubris takes it out of the running for the coming General Election.
"Voters will now focus on which parties have demonstrated stability and exhibited the experience required to help guide New Zealand through its present challenges."
