    @Tim said in Aussie Rugby:

    Who are the locks? Any experience there?

    "There are four locks in the squad with veteran Rob Simmons the oldest in the squad. Other second-rowers included are Lukhan Salakaia-Loto, French-bound Matt Philip and rising Rebels lock Hosea, while Ned Hanigan has been bracketed as a hybrid lock/back-rower. Foreign-based locks Rory Arnold, Will Skelton and Izack Rodda could come into the frame to be called up for the Rugby Championship.

    The fact that only 44 players have been named when SANZAAR has extended their squad sizes to 46 in 2020 because of COVID-19 indicates that a further two players will be included at some point."

    Getting the feeling this is going to be a good Wallaby side. Previous coach held them back a bit IMO.

    @Kirwan In addition to coaching they also seem to have a quality young core that could be developed to play across the next 2 World Cups (Tupou, Hosea, McReight, Wright, Wilson, McDermott, Lolesio, Harrison, Petaia etc).

    @Tim Is the Rebels lineout any good? Wallabies also have some "scrum guru" who was at Glasgow.

    That's a big jump from lineout guru for a real second rate team to Tier 1 team forwards coach.

    @antipodean for what it's worth "In Super Rugby AU, the Rebels had the best lineout success (88 per cent), ahead of the Brumbies and Waratahs (both 83 per cent)."

    Petrus du Plessis He was made scrum coach of Glasgow Warriors on 3 June 2019. He was signed until 2021 in a deal which also involved playing when required. He departed the club in July 2020.
    Like Geoff a real noob coaching wise. Scott Wisemantel attack coach is certainly a better qualified coach. TBH outside of him and Rennie, not inspiring at all. Oh Matt Taylor Defence, previous Glasgow Defence (when they were crap) and Scotland - enough said

    Sometimes a good coach can only achieve so much with average players. Be interesting to see what they can do with a talented, albeit young squad.

    Interesting. I had thought that Rennie might look to make statement early around changing the guard.

    I also thought he'd wait for the skipper stuff particularly given Hooper is going to Japan next year. Continuity I guess, but there are some talented backrowers in the wings.

    @NTA possibly with a shortened start to the season, and also very disrupted, he's sticking with the tried and true and experienced for that leadership. I don't rate Mad-Eyed-Hoopy as an leader to deal with refs, but he probably has the respect of the squad. He puts the mahi in, for sure. And next year, off to Japan, he can removed without controversy or hurt feelings probably permanently

    Yeah there's really no other options in the short term.

    The only other viable option would be Alaalatoa but with Tongan Thor there Alaalatoa doesn't command a starting spot.

    Props are also replaced by design in modern rugby so they're not great choices for captains in every instance.
