Sorry don't want to come across all beer piston wristed gibbon bit I really don't get the Corona stuff. To me it's barely even beer and is popular because of a succession of extremely good marketing campaigns not because of its intrinsic worth. Same with all the light lagers which to me all taste the same.

If I'm that hot and thirsty I'll have ice cold water to cool down and then a decent beer to enjoy.

Corona doesn't function without Lime or Lemon......but again, it's a beer I drink only in the summer months. Any other time I won't touch it and will go for something crafty.
There is still a place in my life to have a bit of a session on them and as of next week I'll be doing just that every night I assume. Not to mention I don't think the Craft beer selection near where we're staying will be particularly extensive.

piston wristed gibbon!

Corona is shit though

But if you are doing anything outside in 30+ temps, an ice cold mass produced, mid strenght lager definitely hits the spot

had a session at the new Sydney outfit that has started brewing up here

https://sauce.beer/our-beers/

It was a little bitter/sweet as they have taken over the site of our old brewery that just didn't make it (a vase study on the importance of timing in successful businesses)

Anyway, not bad. Their "flagship" pale ale was pretty average. But the Extra Hop Sauce was good, the Bubble and Squeak was fucking excellent, and the extra extra hop was good too.

The upshot was, 4 hours smashing schooners of 6.5% - 8.2% beers and i was proper old school hammered.

Will go again.

Finally tried another smaller local joint that people rave about and couldn't find a single beer of theirs i actually enjoyed,

I had a sensational Lion Brown on a hot day after helping move a fridge up a few flights of stairs.

Everything is relative, reminds me of this.....

@MN5 ha I have a prolific fruiting lime tree, so any mass brewed beer gets the lime treatment these days!

What I drink depends on how much I intend drinking, if only 1 or 2 (which TBH is most of the time) I do tend to try out some quality craft beers, but when I'm gonna neck a few, happy to go for something more mainstream.

I recall when I was in the UK, Export Gold was like nectar compared to most other UK tap beers I had been drinking!

Yeah a big session on serious Craft Beers ( many north of 8% ) will give ya a hell of a headache. I found that out the hard way after a shitload of Panhead APAs. Not to mention they bloat the fuck out of you. It’s no coincidence that Craft Beer barons look like walking puddings with big beards.

I think the problem is that so many mass produced 4% beers ( like Tui, fuck you Tui ) just taste so bland , empty and disappointing.

Most places in the tropics you're not going to get much of a choice outside of an ice cold Tiger or local equivalent.

For sure when I finally get to Mexico I will happily drink a cold Corona etc with my tequila

A buddy of mine has a real ale bar in Hertfordshire and he strongly recommends anything which comes out of Titanic Brewery.

Now, I'm much more of a prefer a mainstream cold beer on a hot day sort of guy, but I decided to get some in and give it a go.

The Plum Porter really is worth the hype. It's very much so a porter with more than a hint of plum sweetness. It's absolutely outstanding as a drink, although I'm not quite sure as a beer (if that makes sense). I also decided to try their Iceberg pale Ale. Now this was much more like what I'm used to for small breweries. Strong flavour, shit headache after, and zero satisfaction from drinking a beer.

Which means I suspect you anoraks will bloody love it. But I'd take an ice cold Pure over it anyway of the week and twice on Sundays.

Moral. Stick to the stuff that wins the awards and don't go off piste.

Thought I'd start a new one after sampling a superb offering from a micro-brewery in Matakana (Leigh Sawmill Brewery) on the Auckland side of halfway between Auckland and Whangarei.<br />
<br />
Got 4 different ones to try, and today I tried the Pale Ale, one of the best I have tasted in a long while! <br />
<br />
Mrs TR had bought some for me today, after I had been out and bought the new Tui Blond to try, I will have to try it on a clear palate, as it is rubbish in comparison to the Leigh Pale Ale. <br />
<br />
Looking at thier website (http://www.sawmillbrewery.co.nz) it is not available North of Matakana, nor south of a couple of stores in Auckland.

I'm stuck at work this arvo (it's dead) so decided to have a lurk around outside of the sports threads.... I'm only 11 years late to this one!

Look at you TR, you trend setter... into the craft beers in 2009, before they became cool aye.
I am hoping it's been 11 years since you purchased a filthy Tui?

The sawmill pilsner is one of my fav's

How did I not know about this guy before

Craftwork Brewery Oamaru NZ

Craftwork Brewery Oamaru NZ

A small idiosyncratic Belgian-style nano brewery brewing handcrafted Belgian-style ales in the heart of Victorian Oamaru.

Absolutely outstanding ales (if you like Belgians/Saigon’s/wild fermentation sours)
Well worth visiting if passing through Oamaru but make sure you have a driver for the next leg.
Spent way too much on Xmas pressies for myself there.

#metoo but it is also my local so I am slightly biased.

Nice to have them back in business after the roof burnt off. Caused by spontaneous combustion of unpacked drycleaning apparently. I kid you not, and had no idea that could happen.

@dogmeat I like Mexican beers. Then again when I was crawling out of a canoe in the Chiapas, laden with 4 kg of hungry insects in suffocating humidity and food so spicy it kicked my brain out of my mouth I drank anything.

I think you’ve explained your own point. Mexican beers are pretty poor without line or lemon and when the day isn’t that warm

Shit man, this is the beer thread, you need to use the quote function. I can't remember what I drank last night let alone what I posted about drinking weeks ago!

I might well live on a part of his land, who knows? There is still a lot of farmland around. I bought it about 18 years a go but the farm was divided up well before that.

Leigh Eats (the old fish and chip shop ,down the road from the actual fishery) does awesome takeaways. Unfortunately he closes at 4pm though.

The "beer feud" of a few years ago was actually good for me as I ended up with an extra pub to go to (until the roof burnt off - fixed now) along with all of the vineyards.

A bit of Leigh / Sawmill history:

Alice Neville  /  Jan 31, 2020  /  Kai

The Sawmill Brewery on fires, feuds and forging an identity

The Sawmill Brewery on fires, feuds and forging an identity

In the near decade since Sawmill Brewery's new owners came on board, they've won awards and watched their brewery burn down. And their former landlords at the Leigh Sawmill Cafe accuse them of acting unethically.

Nice that these guys all helped them out after the fire so the brand kept going. Hallertau, Urbanaut, 8 Wired, Kererū and Parrotdog.

@MN5 I explained the level of objectivity I had in Mexico when in the jungle, but I have also been to more urbane Mexican environs and I recall some very good beers. Corona is a bit bland IMO.
