@canefan The new strain being more virulent places greater stress on our contact tracing capability. Based on 70% more contagious each transmission link is going to lead to roughly double the number of cases as previously. Just means we will reach our threshold to effectively trace that much quicker.
Any drop in app use is not going to help matters then

New Zealand’s borders are getting even stricter with arrivals from virtually all countries soon needing a negative Covid test before boarding a plane here.
Covid-19 Response Minister Chris Hipkins on Tuesday broadened the restrictions, which would cover all countries except Australia, Antarctica and some Pacific Island nations. They would also need an extra test with 24 hours of arrival in New Zealand.
The rules were previously introduced for those arriving from the United Kingdom and United States. Those come into force on Friday.
From January 29, those who arrived without evidence of a negative test - for those countries from where one is required - could see returnees stung with a fine of up to $1000.

I give these sort of rumours little credence. It would be political suicide for the government to know of community transmission and not lock down immediately. The transmission rate is so high even 24 hours delay would be catastrophic and the fact the govt had sat on their hands would come out.
That's not the same as saying its definitely not out there - but short of the rumours being based on someone going "psst I've got COVID but I'm not getting tested - don't tell anyone" how would anyone know?
If we do go back into lockdown it's going to be ugly. I'm sure we all know people who don't have the resilience for a third episode.
Precisely. It should not be lost in these "rumours" that the date being bandied about as the announcement of the next lockdown is the same date being thrown around by Billy TK and his mates. The circulation of these rumours will be to try and add credence to his claims and get more of the public onside after his previous date declarations rung hollow.
As dogmeat says, for this many people to know of community transmission this far out with nothing being done by those in charge would be political suicide.

I'm still using the app and also adding names of people who are with me who don't sign in (my wife is terrible if we're together). I'm not at work (still at the NZ chess champs), but will be back later this week, and have some grapevine knowledge, so will be interesting to see if anything has eventuated. I suspect it was just a directive to update Covid plans for the new strain on the grounds that if it does get out, lockdown is more likely, not that anyone has specific knowledge of impending lockdowns.

Is there any data on use of the app's Bluetooth function?
All on the website. 507k turned on as of this week
Just got back to desk and looked at that again. That is only about a 20% takeup on registered apps.
Are the other 80% all tinfoil hat wearers? -
when they first added the bluetooth function it didnt work, well my phone and wifes phones couldnt activate it, but we got a notification a few weeks later saying we should turn it on, and it worked then - both Samsung phones.

@Donsteppa I dont do it for work or gym (although did re-start it for gym last week) do at ~75% of other places I go, most of the big places have numerous ones located, but as always, app is slow opening when I remember to open and use it.
I don't when I go into my store / work either but I should because I am only there for random hours and only those people that I come into contact with would be more at risk if I happen to have it. Yes it stays on surfaces but we use sanitiser, etc.
I would have thought that a "logout" would be sensible too? So anybody that coincided at the same place, at the same time could be logged. I guess the bluetooth part of the app is doing that now but how many people use it?
The tracking is going to be really important if we want to avoid another lockdown (personal privacies aside).
the NSW version though "Service NSW" has a Checkout button - I don't think I have ever remembered to use it.

Same - the Bluetooth function wasn't working for me immediately but became available a few days later. Didn't worry me too much though as I have a Huawei so the CCP are tracking my every move regardless!
-
The Bluetooth function chews through batteries.
I have just had a client cancel an appointment because she says she has a friend she was with yesterday who has tested positive - in the community.
Don't doubt client - not sure about friend though. Lots of people embroider the rumours they believe to make them sound more credible. Some even on here.

Outrageous claim!

@voodoo I know - I'm embroidering to make it sound more credible
Ah phew. I almost spat out my latte here as I'm sitting and chewing the fat with my mate Richie (he used to play some rugby, you might have heard of him)

This.
In a Qld context used QR Codes while on holiday up North.
Only at places where we dined or drank in. Not required at other stores.
Each venue seemed to have a specific website they used, i.e., different company's offering a registration service, not universal govt run. Some had checkout buttons. But whenever I went to use the checkout button it had timed out, or was no longer available.
