I always saw their comedy as weak, even back in the 90s.
Seinfeld was waaaaay better.I've also started a rewatch of Seinfeld, the first season is pretty dire, and I'm pretty sure I can't do any episode a night like I do with all other sitcoms I rewatch as they're just too annoying (original release of one a week probably works best with them).
Was weird not having Elaine in the first ep.
Kramer is in a three way tie with Al Bundy and Homer Simpson for TVs funniest ever character.

Once it got going it was brilliant

I hated it when it was on. I was obsessed with British comedies at the time and perhaps unfairly compared it with them. Obviously sitcoms are a different form of entertainment but if I’m looking to watch something funny I’ll take Bottom or Blackadder any day. In terms of Yank shows, Married with Children crapped on it as well.
But when I moved in with my GF (later wife) I watched it regularly and appreciated it as decent entertainment. There are some good laughs but a lot of seriously unfunny shit as well. The only really likeable character was Joey. Or that Gunther bloke🤣

A very American comedy. Not super witty

Friends fucking sucks and I am judging you all very harshly

@mariner4life we've all read your posts too, so judge away 🤣

Nope have not watched it. I only liked Phoebe as a character, what a songwriter!
Monica was a boring character the scriptwriters obviously had trouble writing for, Rachel-Ross was boring (but Aniston has/had comic chops, great in horrible bosses I thought), and Joey was basically a stereotype in mono but funnier that in real life his failed acting bum of a dad kept trying to get a walkon role on the show (as for top gear, oh well he tried hard, better in Episodes). 'Chandler' had some of the best lines (and interesting girlfriends) until his character acting and the script development fell off a cliff. Schwimmer (who I did not realize directed the fun Run Fatboy Run) reached his acting zenith as a hyperchondriac Giraffe.
But I just posted in to say, you know who was the top athlete of the 6? I would not have guessed.. -

Add Curb your enthusiasm to the list of American shows that were way better. Larry David is hilarious.

Indeed. Much prefer it to Seinfeld. Although the good Seinfeld episodes are really good.

@rancid-schnitzel yea I found Seinfeld hit and miss, never got into Curb your Enthusiasm.

I loved George (who was apparently based on Larry David in real life) and Newman in Seinfeld and that was about it. I guess I just admire the finely chiselled heroic figure.

Yeah I loved Seinfeld, but CYE never caught my attention.
My favourite comedy out of the US would probably be The League I reckon.

Jerry was easily the least funny out of all of them and a shit actor. That standup part before and after was generally really shit. But the bit parts were often brilliant. The parents for instance were perfect.

@bones never seen that.
Been a few years but I remember it being fantastic.
An underrated Brit comedy is Green Wing.

US comedies? Barney Miller. Nothing ever really happened, it was mostly just about the crap coffee. But, I liked it..

Yeah - I seem to recall quite enjoying that. I only have vague memories of it, and couldn't remember the "vibe" - so just looked up some youtube clips... it looks like the entire thing is available on youtube. I might give it a repeat watch - like most Brit stuff, it's fairly short, sharp, sweet.
The League - yeah, that's the fantasy football one? I avoided that for years, due to the name - thinking it was based around actual NFL - which I have zero interest in. But then actually watched it... and fuck, really, really good. Lawyers trading players in their fantasy teams as part of a plea bargain - genuine LOL-snort.
