I said earlier in the week that I wanted the Blues to have a 6/2 split. It was obvious that the Highlanders would attempt to tire out the big Blues pack with an extra forward sub.
When Robinson was ruled out a 6/2 split wasn't really an option.

It's impressive the Blues pack finished stronger. They had one less sub, plus Goodhue getting injured not long after coming on meant the second row basically played the full match.
The Gibson try was earned through multiple players still working hard and over powering the Highlanders.

Surprised something more hasn’t been said about Goodhue’s injury. It was a head to the rib cage looked like from the side.

I can’t keep up with the laws around this but how was Pat T allowed back on the field? I thought once you were subbed off you couldn’t return unless you are a front rower coming on for an injury.

IIRC if you were a tactical sub, you can come back on for an injury. Is that what happened?

@bones as a long (long) suffering Blues fan, the landers are the only side we've had the wood on over the last couple of years. Won 5 of the last 6 I think, and when we played you on EP earlier this year, there were only some ropey decisions (Akira 'forward pass') that prevented us hitting 50.

You could see it another way - the Blues were 7.5 point favourites at the TAB, and covered the spread (just). So the game played out the way the bookies expected

Sitting in the stands the crowd realised how close the Blues were to losing the game. The Highlanders fed off the Blues ill discipline and if they had stuck to their narrow channel of attack they might have been able to steal the game

was impressive how the Blues came from behind to win. Didn't turn dominance into points - but did enough in the end

That to me comes down to poor decision making by half and first five. Black standing deep takes pressure off the defence.

Before I throw Black to the wolves, I'd like to see him get more consistent time with Nock.

Being paired with wildly inconsistent scrumhalves can't make for a confident five-eighth.

He's had two years, including extensive training and a decent forward pack in front of him. He's had good ball in good situations and not delivered. Not throwing a bloke to the wolves after 2 years, btu the reality is if he hasn't shown consistent quality yet, it's very unlikely he's going to start.

Just feel some of @Bones's recent posts very strange and a little silky, unnecessarily so.

Huh, go figure. Here I am taking the piss out of nzzp for his disdain of the Highlanders and all of a sudden I've got a chip, am silky and am a crusader. I even thought @Kirwan was getting into the swing of things with his helping us get better quip, but no, he went uptight straight after.

If you guys wanna check back through the thread, you'll probably find I was the first to congratulate blues fans.

Humour can be hard to get across.

Also, it's a long leap from 'Highlanders got domianted' to 'disdain for Highlanders'. I think you read too much into my posts ... they're a good side, but they really struggled in a lot of areas on Saturday night

Yeah I was wondering the same and thinking I have missed a rule change. Wasn't there a drama over something similar earlier in the season?

You can come back on a head knock check. I thought Goodhue had been hit in the ribs, but checking again he was another player hit in the head by the Highlanders.

@kirwan it was the rib shot that took him down wasnt it, you saw him reel back and stayed down and then went off.

Nope, that's what the commentators thought they saw. He got hit directly in the head, and got taken off for HIA after they checked his neck.

I did see them doing the neck thing at the time and wondered if it was a head knock. Then the replay looked like he had copped one in the ribs...

It’s the left shoulder that hit the head, the behind shot doesn’t show it well.

Might have gone under reported this year how important Hunt has been to the Highlanders. Much better 10 than Ioane, even if the latter can show his skills more dramatically occasionally.

Might be time for Josh Ioane to cash in.

I am biased to Hunt, as he is a graduate of Auckland University's engineering school, but he's put in some big games for the Highlanders.

Agreed, I saw some post hunts started every game bar one since RD.1 last year, the team slowly stabilised around him

I think ioane has shown enough at 15 that he could work if he refocused as a 15 that can cover 10…but yes, it’s getting close to make of break for him

I thought Hunt was pretty good on Saturday for a team getting beaten up front.

There was one moment where he tried to run out of his 22 instead of kick when it wasn't on and I think he did a dopey shove to give away a penalty but was otherwise good.

@kiwiwomble Yeah, other than that his kicking game was good, and he made the most of the ball he had.

I know there was an AB team named, but aren’t you Blues’ fans a bit pissed that the game got so little attention on the Breakdown?

I make it about 10 minutes of the entire show?

Nothing from the landers either!?? Wtf?

Edit: actually now that I think of it more I’m really pissed off for the Landers. Where is the focus on their payers?

Yeah, sure, if I thought that the breakdown meant anything. Same as if I thought that the rugby writers weren't complete retards who were horribly biased against the Blues. Stuff gave higher ratings to the Highlanders forwards than the Blues, despite the Blues complete domination of the ball. Hell, they gave both Ioanes the lowest ratings of anyone (5/10), despite them clearly being the best on the field.

NZ Rugby media is irredeemably stupid and biased - why should I expect anything from them other than rank incompetence? Most of them, especially TJ etc, were probably completely gutted that the Blues won something. Why the fuck does the biggest region not have a single commentator?

They shit on their biggest market all the time, so why care?

Mils and JK have handed their Auck cards in? Or is JK just a pundit these days and Mils is a Hamiltonian?
