I don't really see any point for professional womens rugby. It needs to pay for itself or be part of the pyramid that produces the part that pays for it all.

I can see the point of a professional womens 7s squad funded by NZRYU (and probably HPSNZ).

Hope you don't have a job you could lose...

    So, it is already professional?

    I don't get it.

Modern pack culture misinterprets a legitimately held viewpoint with cynical, evil sexism. It's already cost one bloke his job, and my jibe was that you could be next.

I think women's sport can build a great following and go professional - but it has to build it's way there; you don't create a market overnight. Funding is critical in that, and every piece of funding will be looked at very closely in light of the cratered revenues after Covid. But if (as Sam whatisface did) you conclude that a fully pro women's comp may not be a smart idea, and takes revenue away from the Mens game, you'll lose your job. I don't fully agree with him at all - but it's a funny society we are living in at the moment.

Ah, got ya. Casey losing his job ...

i thought you were either getting all high horse and implying I was advocating some already professional female players lose their pro playing jobs.

    Or

That it was too difficult to play top amateur pro rugby and women players would risk losing their normal jobs.

On the actual subject. Amateur rugby was awesome. Don't throw that away.

No way do I think women's rugby should go down a soul-less route of playing subsidised pro rugby to no crowds. Yes, I think NZ central money should be used to organise tours and tournament prep, and pay the basics of an amateur Farah palmer Cup. Like they do Heartland and U20s etc. Just like the NZRU have done for the many sectors below senior mens for 125 years.

We also have to figure out how seriously we want to compete with England. They have an all-pro womens rugby team. The reality is that for us to compete, we have to get close to that; the win we had over them at the last WRWC final was truly remarkable.

To do that sustainably though, you need players at the grass roots, a meaningful amateur comp, and then enough pros or semi-pros to make up a representative team. Funding that aint' cheap - so you need fans, both physically or their eyeballs. At the very least you need a clear pathway to getting fans engaged long term (and sponsors, etc). I'm all for it, but it's not a slam dunk quite yet.

Both Smith and Davis are listenable (Smith at he serious end, Davis more an entertainer, but was annoying me with his half truths ago how NZR screw the islands), just not as good.

The is no mention of Miles Davis in the lineup announced above, presumably he is the replacement for Jason Pine.

Elliott Smith and Davis are standing in on ZB.

Now HE is good value. Bloody nice fella to have a beer with at the pub albeit about 15 or so years ago. On ZB he has a priceless ability to make otherwise boring topics seem interesting which was a godsend in the old company car that had a Japanese radio.

I don't watch that much women's rugby, but I don't think it has to fund itself. NZ rugby is a top down model, the ABs/Super Rugby basically subsidise the rest of the game, it's been this way for years. I don't mind if the women's game benefits from that like the mens does.

I had to pop out of the office so gave it a go six minutes of ad's followed by Smithy introducing a piece on how "the ladies" got on in the netball.

I like netball; but the ladies - really?

No way will I listen to something with that level of advertising.

    Ian Smith is 64.

I listened to a bit of Dagg/McCullum and a bit of Ian Smith. The ads were one thing but the repeated station IDs were another.

I can see myself giving Smithy and Stafford a casual listen, but the rest seem very meh. Unfair to judge after one day.

I gave it another go this morning during commute. I would really like this to succeed but second airing again a fuck ton of ads and an illustration on why sports stars don't necessarily transition well to a media role. Sort of embarrassing really.

I tuned in a second time this morning. Baz and Izzy aren't bad. The worst thing about Dagg is the same immature post-match interview over-exuberance that puts me off him on tv also comes through on radio at times. The best thing is the 'Quizzy Dagg' play on words. Their inside knowledge of their respective sports and current players due to their recently retired status is good too. They probably read too many texts out. So a real mixed bag. I'm yet to hear anything else on SENZ

Listened to some of their (breakfast) podcasts from yesterday. Not writing them off yet but found it a bit blokey. I want to know about sport, not your social golf. As @dogmeat suggests there is perhaps room for a trained and qualified radio presenter to guide and carry the delivery?

Will try again some stage ... but the fact I haven't raced back to it is reflective of my initial impression.
