I'd of 'run' it faster if I was better was better prepared, I know if I decide to do it next year, I'll be surprised if I cant knock >30mins off my time.

I haven't been in the 'healthy' BMI range for over 20 years, and I know since then I have always been 'overweight' or 'obese' and over decent periods of that I was bloody fit and extremely active so while BMI is a tool that can be used, but do so in conjunction with talking to your Doctor, so I'd argue it isn't an ideal fir for the 'general' population.

haha, studies have shown that losing 10 pounds will knock around 9 minutes off your marathon time. :)

I run with a GPS watch and if I lose a kilo it translates to me running 3-5 seconds faster per kilometre on my daily runs.

Agree that it's not ideal... but from a scientific point of view.. if your BMI is over 30 (obese) then you have a greatly increased risk of heart disease, diabetes etc. So it's a good starting point before looking at things like body fat percentage, cholesterol etc for an individual.
-

I have lost 7kg since the start of the year, but hadn't noticed a significant gains in my pace - I also use a GPS watch.

well the laws of physics dictate that to run the same speed requires less effort at a lower weight, so either you've lost fitness. Or you're not putting in the same effort
-

BMI is the bluntest of blunt instruments. It does not take into account muscle mass, width of one's torso, breadth of shoulders, depth of chest etc. Just height and weight. The correlation between chest and waist measurements is probably a better indication of obesity.

That and one's propensity for stuffing large quantities of shitty processed food down that gaping gullet.
-
