Really sad, no band on earth was better than the sum of their parts than these guys. Rock steady bass player and very good singer too.

    RIP

I got to see ZZ Top live twice. The first was along with 78,000 other fans at Western Springs on the Afterburner tour. The most recent was when they played at Seddon Park when the V8s were in Hamilton. They always put on a good show.

    Joey Jordison, original Slipknot drummer.

Not many in the industry who don’t shower his drumming with the utmost praise.

    More horrendous news

New Zealand’s cycling community has been left shocked by the death of Olivia Podmore, who represented New Zealand at the Rio Olympics in 2016.

Her death, which has been confirmed by her family, followed a post on one of her social media accounts in which she outlined the pressures of her high level sport.

@donsteppa What was her story? It sounds like she qualified but didn't get selected, is that the case?

As a selector how the hell do you position that with people so obviously invested, especially when any one of your squad may have mental health demons that you have no idea about until they do something desperate?

It's a bloody tough spot. Did they let her down easy? I'd like to think so. I don't think there is any correct answer, and after everything is done she is still gone

It is a tragedy. Both our sprinters (Zoe Hobbs and Eddie Osei-Nketia) were annoyed they missed selection too due to the NZOC qualifying standards. People deal with disappointment in different ways.

Google isn't being very helpful at the moment so I'll tag in @WillieTheWaiter who will know the cycling selections much better than me?

Greg Rowlands; Bay centurion and All Black

    alt text

People are mourning the passing of a man who has been described as well-loved and well respected in the Tauranga community.

The Bay of Plenty Rugby Union announced the passing of former All Black and Steamers player Greg Rowlands on Sunday.

“It is with a heavy heart we inform the passing of former Bay of Plenty fullback Greg Rowlands,” reads the post on Facebook.

“Greg played 161 games for the Bay from 1969–1981 and played four matches for the All Blacks, on their 1976 tour of South America.

“Greg will be sorely missed by all of us in the Bay of Plenty community.

“Sending our love Brent and the Rowlands family.”

Family and friends will gather at Tauranga Sports Rugby Club on Thursday, August 19, at 1.30pm to farewell Greg.

Greg was profiled in 2016 on the after effects of head knocks in rugby. Rugby and dementia: Frustrating lapses warned loved ones all was not well, back when he was 68 and living "in a Tauranga care home for dementia patients" according to the associated Facebook post. 😞
