I think he deserves a chance to see where he can take this side. Its been a tad underwhelming since far, but there have been some improvements within the side and we're slowly but surely heading in the right direction imo.

I feel like no matter what he does, he'll always be disliked.

I think kiwis like a fair playing field. Unlike England or France for example, where factors such as class, which university you went to etc often have a direct impact on job opportunities, we tend to give everyone a fair go and pick the best person not the most well connected. I think what grates with foster is that he has no personal record to speak of, and basically got in on Hansen’s shirt tails, shirt tails which were very underwhelming in the last 2 years of his tenure. Feels like foster is using the ABs to try and prove he can coach rather than already being proven.

@african-monkey not sure about 'deserves' a chance, but by the same token, I think there have been alot of disruptions to his time that it would be pretty harsh to can him before he has had a good chance to really 'own' things

it cuts both ways though-arguably the ABs have been less distrupted than other teams.

There is really no excuse at all to losing, for the first time ever, to an Argentine team straight out of a year of no rugby and 2 weeks of lockdown. Oh, and covid positive members recently. That should have been the nail.

@stargazer you'd like to think, that had we lost to Fiji and Aus they wouldn't have re-signed him.

But I've been of the view the decision was made weeks/months ago to re-sign him (or not, turns out it was to re-sign)

What happens if we lose to SA, Arg, Wales?

His record is shakey already, and makes NZR look unprofessional again re-signing him, while he still has half a dozen or so games to win/lose

SA a distinct possibility (if they ever play it) but no shame in that.

    Argentina 😂😂😂

    Wales
It’s outside the test window so no guarantees we’ll be able to field our best 23

    And even then, it’s unlikely

Fair enough. But I want to see rejig of the assistants after the Rugby Championship. McLeod has done little to justify his retention. Also I want a new, younger coach for the 2023-27 cycle.

I will be pleased for Fozzie to prove us wrong by going on to win Le Coupe du Monde

I know gender-fluid is very PC.

This amused me from the original article:

*New Zealand Rugby has moved to give Foster and his management team security *

Obviously expecting some ferners to show up after the announcement.

Anybody else think the NZR and The Canes have the same board happy with mediocre results

I guess he isn't being protected by the AB forwards then but come to think of it I know a 6 who shines in off-field offense...

The senior players (and Shand) would have been asked for feedback and I doubt this decision would have been made now if their opinions were overwhelmingly negative.

The players generally seem happy enough and Foster seems like a decent enough bloke. But that does not mean he's the best person to coach the team and get it performing to its absolute maximum. Maybe he's too likeable and not willing to push players hard enough or make tough enough decisions...?

That said, woulda thought they coulda waited until post TRC to give the illusion that results mattered.

Perhaps that was the plan but they thought Delta might get in the way?

One of the reasons Robinson mentioned on the news tonight was that it gave the group stability in uncertain times

    He'd retire job done IMO.

I don't see that bring Razor in now increases our RWC chances that much to be fair.
It isn't as if Foster and co are ignoring players that should be there and any poor periods have been attributed by the players themselves as down to not following instructions.
My belief is that, at present, our problems are mainly down to getting experience and test level combos established. Changing things up now won't help that.
The game itself is also n a funny place laws wise and we have to adapt ourselves to that. Just as SA found that trying to play a style that didn't suit them didn't work, the ABs trying to play a power game won't work either.

I pretty much agree with all of that.

The team does seem to be moving in the right direction but possibly not fast enough. I don't think changing horses in the middle of the stream is going to help but, as some have suggested, the backroom staff may need some tweaking.

@machpants Shand is higher up the food chain at NZR than Foster (and Hansen was) as he is part of the Executive Team. His job security is not dependent on Foster keeping his position.

I was more talking about the players, as mentioned a good environment does not mean good coach. Still the proof will be in the pudding if SA turn up full bore to the RC, and France play to their max.

    Oh god, France now too?

Well the general rugby fans gave their feedback at the second test at Eden Park by staying away in droves.

No they didn’t, we sold out basically the capacity of the Waikato Stadium at short notice after a good crowd the week before.

If it had been announced earlier people could have planned travel or budgeted for it. That considered it was a good turnout. And were in good spirits.

There's no way they could can Foster now, it was appointing him in the first place that was utterly ridiculous. And with our first ever loss to a weak Argentina the damage is done and he's permanently in the history books now. Fuck knows where he will take this team, but one things for sure, consistency will not be a feature.
