Well those people that got stabbed the other day did anyway.
I don't see the issue. Who does it affect except the sensibilities of those that want to get upset about everything they perceive as PC or similar?
Want to buy a machete? You still can.
Need to chop some veges? You still can.
Need to get a pig hunting knife? Off to the shop you go.Only difference is that you cant pick them up in aisle 3 and wave them about. It's a H&S assessment for staff as well.

@crucial i can, however, smash two bottles of San Pelligrino together and achieve the same result.
if some sick fluffybunny wants to hurt some people, they will find a way to do it. taking kitchen knives off the shelves because it happened once is a massive over-reaction.

So guns and ammo on the shelf are OK as well then?
Once upon a time that was OK as well.

I was going to say it's probably a move by the individual business that is good for business. But, who am I kidding. It's a duopoly. We'll be going there regardless.

okay Captain big government, if we are playing stupid questions, where do you stop? Ban cars? They have been the go-to weapon a few times. Baseball bats would be more lethal than a kitchen knife, get rid of those too.

Quite obviously the current line is at knives.
Point is that things change with time. It usually takes something high profile to instigate a change like this as the risk level goes up in the minds of those affected. Supermarket workers probably paid no attention to having large knives easily available on the shelves but now they do.
I just don't see why you would have a problem with that.Knife display and purchase laws are common around the world, including Australia. We just thought we'd get away without them for a bit longer than we did.

I just don't see why you would have a problem with that.Statistical probability of incident. Melbourne hasn't outlawed cars.

Do we know what type of knife it was? You could easily grab a knife out of a block set on display and cause mayhem.

@mariner4life not sure if you’ve seen this movie but it’s pretty good, I think you’d like it.

You can kill someone with a fucken pen if you’re precise and skilled enough. I worked with an ex military guy who was furious his Swiss Army knife got confiscated many years back. He pointed out the above fact to cabin crew and for some reason they took offence to it.

The Stihl shop is a treasure trove of lethal weapons.
It's all fucking nonsense and won't change a thing. Countdown here was closed for two hours while they removed knives but I could find any number of weapons in there if I chose to as mentioned by several people above.
The same happened after 9/11, any number of lethal weapons on a plane. Even had them on the flight deck. Which has been the cause of 100s of deaths with suicide pilots (if the investigations are correct).
Stupid knee jerk reaction.

Don't forget the circular saw blades. And a flat head screw driver would make a great shank

I had nail scissors taken off me after 9/11. I pointed out that if I wanted to kill everybody I was sitting in the left front seat and really didn't need the scissors, I knew how to do it without a manicure.
I didn't want a cavity search so I handed over the scissors.

I remember having to mail home a 1.5 in Swiss army knife when I realised it was on my keys going through back check. Funny times
