<p>I'm surprising the wife with a trip to NY for her birthday in a couple of weeks. As neither of us have ever been there, I'm trying to grab as much intel as possible before I get there. </p>
<p> </p>
<p>We're only there for 5 days, and we're staying in the Meatpacking district.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Looking for must-dos, things to avoid/are over-rated, places to eat, places to drink etc. </p>
<p> </p>

<p>One of my fav cities in the world. People might have some good tips for places to go, I dont. I just know that you have to be a special kind of retard (or desperately unlucky) to not have a great time regardless of what attractions or sites you go to.</p>

<p>Never been, only been to California which was without a doubt the most fun holiday I've ever had but definitely want to see the East Coast too. I know heaps of people who have been, my old man lived there in the 60s and loved it. Will be hot as fuck at that time but you'll be used to that. Everyone I've spoken to raves about the Pizzas, Central Park, Coney Island etc. I think the key thing is not to wear the tourist outfit of bright t shirts and shorts with a bum bag or else you'll get beaten and mugged so maybe leave those pink shorts of yours at home ? </p>

<p>I think it's one of those places ( not unlike California ) that we antipodeans almost feel we know well before we get there because of all the times we've seen it in the movies. After Saturday Night Fever, Godzilla, Friends ( ahem, only watched it with the ex ), Shaft, Live and Let Die ( Bond goes there at the start ), Summer of Sam and various other movies I feel I could pretty much drive a tour bus and show people around.</p> -
<p>Get a taxi to drop you off at Battery park one morning around 10am. Grab a quick bagel or something from a vendor and have some comfy shoes on.</p>

<p>Then simply walk. All the way up the middle. Through downtown/wall street, tribeca, canal street, little italy, chelsa, mid town until you hit central park. up through the park, check out the met, then onto harlam. Depending on how many times you stop, this will take you 3-4 hours and is about 10k.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>You'll see, shop, smell, eat through mutliple different places, and you'll get an essence of New York, and just how cosmpolitan it it. I cannot recommend doing this enough.</p>

<p>And the museum on the aircraft carrier is an absolute must. Concorde, Blackbird etc. Epic.</p> -

Yankees game was awesome, even Mrs CF enjoyed the experience. It's a cliche but katz's deli on the lower east side does great pastrami sandwiches. If you plan on visiting attractions like the empire state building and sightseeing on a Hudson River ferry it pays to preorder online. There is a separate much shorter queue for ticketholders at empire state and the ferry rides sell out fast in the summer. Bourdain's old joint Les halles is good for a solid French meal heavily meat oriented. We bought show tickets online before leaving but you can get these in times square if the show is not new.

<p>Apparently he always said he hated Billy Joel and would never have any ( music of his ) in his restaurant, the piano man then apparently took a photo and emailed it to him saying "Look, you've got some Billy Joel in your restaurant" ( those blokes are clearly too old for Twitter )</p>

<p>My ex and I used to enjoy the cooking channel and in terms of "celebrity" chefs good old Ramsey always had it over all the others. I haven't seen much of Bourdain but that Billy Joel stuff did irk me and made him seem like a bit of a cock but I certainly wouldn't tell him to fuck off if he turned up at my doorstep with heaps of ingredients and some nice bottles of red.</p> -
