@tewaio About 10 people die every day in the UK from Road accidents, yet road safety is a massive thing.
I am comparing covid death rates to death rates of other endemic communicable viruses that society lives with. It's a better comparison than road deaths.

@tewaio About 5% of the Population ain't producing antibodies after the vaccinations. Unless you are willing for them to get sick, then cases numbers matter. I would rather have the (frankly minor) inconvenience of a mask indoors for the winter than scores of other people dying.
This sort of overly emotional language regarding covid really isn't helpful.
It's helpful if it stops people dying. I get you're a libertarian, I don't like the restrictions much either. But while cases are on the rise, sensible precautions rather than dogmatic over-reactions are best.

@tewaio Flu has been around for generations and we have a series of tested drugs that help fight it. (Sadly lots of people who should get flu jabs each year turn them down.) Not quite there yet with the much newer covid but we will be.
What remains alarmng about Covid is its high infection rate with a high potency rate among those without covid antibodies.
We are in a much better place than 18 months ago, but measured caution is still wise.

I'm starting to get concerned now.
Last few days have seen consistent week on week drops of numbers. Thus, modellers are now starting to predict that there could be a bit of a drop off of the recent case / hospital numbers.
Considering the modellers have got every single fucking thing way wrong up until now ... I can only assume this means that cases are going to seriously take off.

There does seem to be sure-fire way to predict if cases, hospital admissions and/or deaths are going to go down. It occurs about 5 days after Starmer demands further lockdowns or restrictions...

Has anybody who lives here even heard of this?
Genuinely the first time I've read anything on it. A google search on it shows me a couple of articles a month ago & then some recent ones in publications I've never even heard of.
The herald's continuing fascination with blasting Britain is truly weird.

Nope
But it's called the Flu

Finally, masks are a visual signal to everyone that we're still in a dangerous pandemic.
The UK is still in a dangerous pandemic (see below). Look I want this thing to be over as much as anyone but there are still over 100 deaths a day (with covid) in the UK and over 40,000 new cases. Masks do some good and are helping other countries drive down cases.
Once there are fewer Covid caass and deaths than traffic accidents in the UK then I will gladly drop the mask.
Deaths need to be segrated between vaccinated and unvaccinated. Think you'll find most in the latter camp. Self-extinguishing phenomenon.

Once covid deaths go down to a handful of deaths a week, then I will say this thing is over, but until then I think sensible precautions (vaccines even for the young, hand washing and yes those irritating masks) are necessary.
For what it's worth I think cases will drop dramatically once UK teens get vaccinated in significant numbers.
75% of schoolchildren have natural immunity.

Masks doen't do much -- see comparisons England vs. Scotland. Key going into winter is not to cram people into poorly ventilated spaces. I.e. Social distancing.

@sparky said in Coronavirus - UK:
@pakman Best research I have seen is that they have some impact. Worth wearing on a crowded bus, train, tube or supermarket. Not worth in outdoor or ventilated area.
I wear on crowded public transport, but I'm not convinced they do much anymore, given the antibody status of the UK population.

Definitely the super cold is a thing.
When I get a cold I usually don't have a day off work, or maybe one at most. I got my first cold in 2yrs a month ago and it wiped me out. 4 days in bed. It was worse than covid (apart from the 24hrs-ish of breathlessness that I had during covid).
I didn't get a cold at all last winter (unsurprisingly) and this year I got one before I got the usual flu jab in November.
My neighbour who is immunocompromised also got the super cold (not from me) and was in bed for 10 days. She's a primary school teacher, and its gone right through her school including all the parents etc.
I realize I am using cold and flu interchangeably here, and they're not the same thing, but the point is after a "year off" spreading through the population, the regular winter cold this year in the UK is pretty brutal.

Dammit, after carefully avoiding the deadly plague for 20 months, I have now tested positive for Covid on a lateral flow test. Have had a follow-up PCR test and should get the results of that tomorrow. No real symptoms apart from fatigue. In isolation for a wee bit.

Hopefully the vaccine will help square you away mate

Mrs M's grandson had anti-vaxxers protesting outside his school yesterday as the kids arrived. When it got a bit noisy & intimidating, some of the mothers walked towards he protestors and held up their mobile phones shouting "It's 5G", It's 5G!".
10/10 for smart thinking
