Am I the only person to have heard of securing pegs?

Securing pegging usually costs me a few hundred dollars at least...

This is in really really really bad taste ....

    @chimoaus wow! So very sad.

Someone will be facing charges and possible jail time surely?

Depends - if they did everything right and it just fucked up anyway... What then?

I imagine the coroner will be asking plenty of questions. Did the hire company give adequate safety instructions, do they themselves check the weather and let the hirer know about the risk in high wind.

I can imagine a teacher or support staff member is allocated the job of the jumping castle, they may have never set one up before and may not have been aware of the risks or how to tie it down.

No doubt like most of these things there is a lot of human error at multiple stages.

I borrowed a jumping castle for a twin 5 year old party and of course no instructions and I must admit I can't recall overengineering the tie downs. Never crossed my mind at the time the wind could pick up and throw it 10 metres in the air.

I just really feel for all involved and the poor person who set it up has to live with this forever. Also someone at the school must have suggested the castle, so many people impacted.

    Horrible. Hate this.

Firstly, heard ABC report that winds at closest BOM site (Devonport Airport) were mild. <20kmh.

2ndly, would have thought this would be run by the owners of the Bouncy castle, rather than a teacher/parent. But if they take usual precautions how do they anticipate freak wind gusts?

    1. Wasn't there a recent similar thing somewhere? Was it here or the States?

    2. Hate this, but it reminds me of that awful Chris Lilley "comedy" 'Finding the Australian of the Year', where one of the nominees rescued kids from a bouncy castle incident. It was comedic because it was so improbable.

@chimoaus possibly just dry hired with equipment?

Terrible tragedy and no doubt will be alot of finger pointing, Aus H & S regs are pretty strict aren't they?

I saw this happen at a kids day at my rugby club years ago. No one on it at the time but a freak twister came out of nowhere and it took off. Never allowed my kids near one since.

@booboo Yeah the more I think about it you would think a hire company would have set it up for safety reasons. Guess we will find out in time what caused it.

Being Straya it's not out if the realms of possibility that a willy willy hit.

Dunno if they happen in Tassie but seen a few here, g3berally "inland" a bit.

Basically minor tornados out of nowhere. Quite surreal.

So awful. We see reports of kids dying almost every day, cancer, car crashes, other stuff. But this hits really hard for some reason, the mental image of 10 and 11 yr old kids being flung from this thing to their deaths just kills me.

Yeah, it’s hard to even think about it.

And then the trauma that follows, with class mates and other kids witnessing it and living with those images and the experience for the rest of their lives.

Had a scarry incident a couple of years ago too at an event with a bouncy castle. Wind got up out of no where. Fortunately no one badly hurt, but enough to freak me out. Not allowed my kids on an outdoor one since.

My condolences to everyone in Tasmania. Terrible news.
