@tim I saw him as a spectacular athelete with grid iron like passes his repertoire, but not really as hardman unless sexual harrassment in fiji counts

I think we need to define hardman for the purpose of this thread, but, in the early 90s he definitely brought a hard edge to the pack, plus you wouldn't want to get in a scrap with the three Brooke bros back in the day.

Brendon Cannon (I think) must be in the frame for his wuss punch on Kev.

agree hard edge - but Tim wants people that pciked on half backs etc, which like most locks he did in spades and I respected that, his brothers were what I would call hard (and you wouldnt take them on as a group) , at any rate it is all subjective at best

Wasn’t really a wuss punch, it just didn’t drop him that was all.

    Ian Jones been mentioned yet?

@nepia Yeah Larsen was a beat cop in Takapuna.

I can't remember Kamo ever being involved in anything?

Back in the mists of time Grant Batty was an angry little man. Would run halfway across the field to get involved in a bit of biff. Even though he would have need a step ladder in order to connect. Definitely compensating...

I thought it was common knowledge he was a dirty fucker in mauls and scrums? I've been told by two ABs, one who was a teammate of his.

Keven never even felt it, didn't notice it, kept on doing whatever he was doing uninterrupted - likely first knew about it when he saw the replay a week later! 🙂 😉

The reality is Cannon hit him flush with a good right hook, shoulder behind it, that rocked Keven. He reckoned it sent him cross-eyed and he kept his feet only through the grappling that followed. As they were walking off to the sin bin Keven amused himself with the thought that he'd been yellow carded for copping a punch in the head!

Mealamu confirmed they were lying on adjoining benches getting treated, talking about family. He played on. He had given Cannon a closed eye and some bloody cuts, and Brendan could not continue.

His later advice to others was:

"Don't go near his head'. I've proved that's ineffective. I haven't tested Kevvy's ribs yet so give them a go,"

Wasn't Jones involved in a punch up with Norm Hewitt at training? Norm came off second best iirc. Jones also had a scrap with John Eales and soundly beat the shit out of him. He may have looked like a weird gangly mofo but he was not one to be fůcked with.

Wallaby prop Dan Crowley was a dirty cnut and cheapshot merchant. But he was a legit undercover cop and probably no coward. There were times he didn't have his picture in the match programs because they didn't want to reveal his identity.

@rancid-schnitzel It appears Jones definitely did have a bit of mongrel

    https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/rugby/international/121073542/springbok-opens-up-on-all-black-punch-that-ended-1995-world-cup-final

also found an article that confirms Norm and Jones exchanged punches at a training session in Brisbane in 96

When did he beat up Eales ?

I’d put money on Norm vs Jones, perhaps he was feeling a bit like a midweeker and didn’t want to get in trouble for bashing a test player ? In fact I’m sure I remember that was the case, the book is in storage and not available til next month so I’ll have a look then.
