Players who try to look hard, or talk a big game, but fall short. Bonus points for cheap shots and picking on halfbacks.

    Some nominations:

    Ali Williams
    Dominic Bird
    Michael Brial
    Nathan Grey
    Bakkies Botha
    Ellis Genge
    Kyle Sinckler
    James Haskell
    Shannon Frizzell

Not sure Bakkies fell short, he seemed to be a genuine nasty bastard to me

I can't remember Kamo ever being involved in anything?

Yeah, never saw Jones try it on. Bad call from @Nepia

Nah, Jones was alright I say. He had a real touch of mongrel and was pretty able with it, mobile and involved. I wouldn't categorise him as a "hard man" - he was an important part though of some of the best forward packs I have seen from you blokes.

I well remember on a bus on the way to a Bledisloe game in my Sydney home town - a mate who had done well in contaminated site remediation regularly had his clients out for an early dinner then off to the game together.

On this occasion he introduced me to a new young engineer he had put on, making sure I heard him say "cousin of Ian Jones". She was all demure and polite meeting his most important client - paid him a fortune 'cos he was good at it - until I spluttered "He's one of the dirtiest bastards who ever pulled on a boot for you mongrels!" Well it brought the house down, she beamed with pride - made her night. 🙂

I have just discovered I did not read the thread title / focus accurately ...

Wasn't Jones involved in a punch up with Norm Hewitt at training? Norm came off second best iirc. Jones also had a scrap with John Eales and soundly beat the shit out of him. He may have looked like a weird gangly mofo but he was not one to be fĹŻcked with.

When did he beat up Eales ?

I’d put money on Norm vs Jones, perhaps he was feeling a bit like a midweeker and didn’t want to get in trouble for bashing a test player ? In fact I’m sure I remember that was the case, the book is in storage and not available til next month so I’ll have a look then.

95 I think. Must have been the Sydney test. Back in the days when players could go at it away from play and we didn't stop the game for 15 minutes to watch it all in slo mo. Was taking place at the side of the screen but Eales face indicated that he came off second best.

@frank Constant off the ball cheap shots on smaller players. Head butts on the ground.

    Oh yeah...I guess.
But he was hard as nails. Fearsome player.

Hard as nails? Did you ever see him try and take on anyone that wasn't a foot shorter than him or wasn't prone? He's one of the best examples in the thread. Pretend hardman, never tries it on with anyone that is actually hard.

@mn5 yeah as big of a dick as Haskell is, he's probably stepped in the ring with some chaps most of us would run a 10 sec 100m from.

Definitely. He’s also genuinely funny in between the dickhead moments too…..and as that clip showed he squared up to Marler face to face, no cheap shots.

There is a former Reds and Australian hooker, not been mentioned yet who surely deserves this designation.

One of the better nicknames, “Axel”…..definitely a bit high brow for Crusaders fans to figure out though.

Difficult to tell who is a genuine hard man in the modern era. Far too much pushing and shoving, not enough Kevin Skinners.
