I would say that there are probably 5 undeniables In Beatles, Stones, Who, Led Zep and Queen.Probably the close we've ever come to agreeing on a music thread. I would swap Pink Floyd and The Who on the undeniable. I do really enjoy The Who, but I'm not sure they are quite at the top level like the others.
Clash, Pink Floyd, Kinks all with very strong claims.
Then any number to argue over.
Simply from sheer numbers and how well known their songs are known I can’t see why Oasis shouldn’t be somewhere on a list. If they were to announce a reunion gig tomorrow it would have enormous demand.I do sometimes wonder if the next generation will look back at Oasis, Coldplay & then on the next level perhaps Radiohead / Blur as game changes in the way the others were. I highly doubt it.
Yeah I struggle with where to rate the Who…..they had what many consider the best rhythm section in history, Townsend was a great writer…..but Roger Daltry as good as he was just wasn’t up there with the very best Rock singers….
They have done some undeniable bangers though and were part of a period in time where British rock bands shat all over their American counterparts overall

I think this is a bit of a myth. Sure there was a British invasion but that was as a result of every record company trying to find the next Beatles. For every Stones, Who or Kinks there was a Hermans Hermits, Tremeloes or Dave Clark 5
US bands of the 60's off the top of my head that were innovative and popular - Velvet Underground, Jefferson Airplane, Byrds, Doors, CCR, Buffalo Springfield, Sly & The Family Stone, Grateful Dead, Zappa, Beach Boys - plus the Motown discography. Not all of those are my thing but there's enough to negate any notion of British superiority.
I don't include Hendrix as he was really a British act who just happened to be a Yank.

Awesome effort but I’m not sure how accurate album sales are to be honest. You can google any artist and get a number but take it with a grain of salt.
I'd suggest having two albums on the charts resulting in universal agreement as amongst the biggest selling albums of all time is incontrovertible. It's not like pre-sales were a big thing when they were released.

Oasis Knebworth played to 250,000 over two nights but ticket applications were enough to do 18 shows! The equivalent of 4% of the population at the time applied for tickets. I understand that is still a UK record.
Liam Gallagher solo shows at Knebworth sold out immediately with 160,000 pax over two nights.
Whether you like them or not you cant deny that they could pull a huge crowd.

As I said, I could be misjudging the audience worldwide, but I don't believe they could do the same if they reunited. And I say that as someone who liked their modern Beatles music at the time, but it doesn't have that replayability other music has.

I don't see it as a contest. Both should be on the list. My only wonder is how well known PFs music is among younger generations (ie has it lasted?). Oasis get the advantage there of being younger.
Put it this way. Stop an average young punter on the street and ask them to name or identify these bands and I think PF may struggle a bit in recognition.

Fair call but I was referring to the early to mid 70s, not the 60s, when British bands like the ones mentioned plus Deep Purple, Sabbath, Genesis, Yes we’re more dominant overall.

It will come down to age and awareness but I still see plenty of these t-shirts worn by the younger generation.

I don't mind Oasis TBH. I suspect Noel would have the good grace to be embarrassed at the suggestion he displaced The Floyd just as much as he would be chuffed he was ranked up there with The Beatles. He did a bit of radio over the holidays and came across really well. But Liam's a fluffybunny, no question.

I understand what you mean but I think it depends where you were. In the UK back in the 70s you didn't hear much US music and vice versa, apart from on niche radio like US campus radio and Peal on UK's Radio 1. But it was different for us. We in NZ did really well in terms of access to bands from around the world. You were just as likely to hear Lou Reed as David Bowie, with a big dose of Aussie music in there as well. And on TV Grunt Machine and Radio with Pictures had no equivalent anywhere in the world. There wasn't a sense of UK bands dominating. They were just part of the mix.

I think it depends on the day as to which one is being the biggest dickhead but if you added it up Liam probably comes out on top.
You can often judge these 'stars' based on who their real friends are. Weird thing with Noel is that he is good mates with Paul Weller (who is a genuinely nice bloke even if pig-headed at times) but is also close with Bono.
Who knows?
All I do know is that he is filthy rich from royalties that just roll in day after day. -

I think the Fern is underestimating their popularity due maybe to recency bias (which sounds odd for a band whose heyday was the 90s). I think they'll always be massive to the generation who really grew up on them and they'll gain new younger fans like most bands do.
From the OP though I agree with ditching the Stone Roses, the Jam and The Smiths. I've always found The Smiths fucking awful and hated Morrisey's singing even before he became a twat.
