@jk you have more faith in people's intelligence than i...personally i think it has more to do with
Ok now you are being unnecessarily insulting.
I've just realized an archaeologist colleague of mine used to talk about his digs in "the Ukraine" but not only was English not his first language, he was also talking about the Bronze age region.
Hence it is still "the Ukraine" in some UNESCO documents on archaeological finds in the area. Anyway, I'm out of here. You guys play mean. -
@nostrildamus was not meaning to be insulting, that scene is one of the more famous ones, at least amongst people ive met especially when playing Risk, it transcended the show to some degree and i honestly think for a lot of people it is one of very few touch stones in regards to Ukraine and so may have played a role in continuing the use of the "The"
now, why they use the term could quite well be because it was the 90's and there was more of a hangover re it former name

When I was a kid and the shortwave band was blanketed by Soviet transmitters and English language propaganda, all easily receivable throughout the South Pacific, Radio Kiev always identified themselves as “Radio Kiev, Ukraine SSR,” there was never a “The” and I don’t recall them ever employing the prefix. I tried to get the Station I.D. here but sadly yt only has their interval signal. Pretty sure I got some airchecks I taped on a recorder and QSLs buried somewhere. Hey man, when it was one tv channel, in b&w, off-air at midnight, kids had to find their own entertainment. 73s!

Here we go!

It now has a choice, effectively allow Putin to move westwards to eventually confront EU states like Poland in a few years time, or have its economy fucked by high energy prices if Russia turns the gas supply off. The chickens may be coming home to roost.
Russia needs export dollars more than the EU needs gas long term. It would decimate Russia's economy - petroleum exports constitutes half its exports.
Not to mention Ukraine has a sheetload of mineral resources, including uranium, and a very large percentage of arable land.

The circular firing squad cometh. The question America is asking tonight is, Is Sleepy Joe awake?
-
@kid-chocolate the answer would be no

China’s not a small market. China doesn’t always play by our rules. They have their own self-interests and could flip us all the bird. They also like oil, ‘cos they don’t have the deepest reserves. While the rest of us have been distracted and dancing to panic from the Wuhan Institute of Virology, Chairman Xi has been quietly getting chummy with Vlad. Could just be a coincidence?

Putin only understands power and force. What the fuck are the US and NATO waiting for?
Something like 74% of Americans want nothing to do with Ukraine. And funnily enough, data indicates that the less Americans know where to find Ukraine on a map, the more they want to intervene. I’d say war fatigue and regret has made smart people really-really skeptical about new wars.

This is uncannily like pre-WW2. We just don’t have a « peace for our time » declaration. No European countries want to send their sons and daughters to die on Ukrainian battle fields. I’m yet to recall sanctions achieving anything other than abject poverty for citizens. Ukraine is one thing but would Europe sacrifice the Baltic states? That you would think would be a step too far.

Politicians talking big on sanctions - whoopy-de-doo
But none are willing to send troops into battle.
Why do we have NATO again? They are a paper tiger. History may judge them as they judged Chamberlain
-
Putin really is a fluffybunny

@kid-chocolate Russia and China have always been chummy. They have been loosely on the same 'side' since the start of the 20th century.

Why do we have NATO again? Not for this, literally.
members agree to come to one another's aid in the event of an armed attack against any other member state
But, was it's modern purpose is - is a fair question.

They went through a period where they weren't, philosophical differences in the 70s wasn't it?
