@majorrage said in What are you listening to, right now................:

Motivated by Michael Burry in last nights watching of The Big Short I've been listening to old school Metallica this morning.

Ride The Lightning surely must go down as one of the all time great albums. No disrespect to other earlier Metallica albums, but it's just classic after classic after classic.

Personal fave from a live concert ..

I love that album, but it doesn't have a lot of competition pre-release. I'd love to see a ~three hour live concert recording that concentrated in their "big numbers". Especially given Lars' improvement technically and ability to mix properly,

    Hmmmm

    WTF?

Metallica's Lars Ulrich 'Regressed' At Drumming

Metallica's Lars Ulrich 'Regressed' At Drumming

Metallica's Lars Ulrich feels he's 'regressed', when it comes to playing drums.

@mn5 he keeps time better now which is the most important aspect as a drummer. He's probably thinking more about his fills.

He’s kept time perfectly since day one. Always in the pocket with Hetfields rhythm guitar.

As he himself said he’s the best drummer in the world…..for Metallica.

James used to abuse and spit on him his time was that bad.

For all that Metallica wouldn't exist without Lars, they sound better with better drummers:

Whilst he can be a genuine dickhead I’ve always rated him pretty well as a drummer. Probably a case of Hetfield taking awhile to gel with him, after all everyone knows in terms of a band pecking order the drummer is the lowest of the low, even below bass players. They’re always the ones who make the mistakes.

I’d say the band are all top notch musos despite them pretty much being Nickelback in terms of it being ‘cool to diss them’

Hammett has probably improved the most since his lessons with Joe Satriani.

It’s just not Deep Purple without Richie for me even though Steve Morse is an excellent player and has been in the band longer than he ever was !

Yeah, fair point... this one would certainly be my favourite guitar riff.

@NZbloke If I never hear Smoke on the Water again I will be quite happy.

It was great the first 500 times I heard it but it is overplayed on the radio.

    Peak 70's prog rock self-indulgence

Purple are defined by “Smoke on the Water”, it’s the song people think when they think of them.

    That’s life.

As is often the case they have ( in my opinion ) an absolute truckload of songs that are heaps better. The entire “Deep Purple in Rock” album as one example ( apart from “into the fire” perhaps )

@MN5 In Rock was the first purple album I bought.

I agree with you about SOTW (like Stairway to Heaven for Led Zep) but it's not even the best track on Machine Head.

There were a lot of songs that were overplayed on the radio back then & these days too... reckon you appreciate a song like this more when you haven't listened to it for a fair while.

Indeed. Fairly sure I’ve brought this up on here before. Both ‘signature songs’ are totally overplayed.

@NZbloke not sure how you’ve avoided ‘Smoke on the Water’ for years, I hear it all the time when channel surfing in the car !
