It’s just not Deep Purple without Richie for me even though Steve Morse is an excellent player and has been in the band longer than he ever was !
Yeah, fair point... this one would certainly be my favourite guitar riff.

@NZbloke If I never hear Smoke on the Water again I will be quite happy.
It was great the first 500 times I heard it but it is overplayed on the radio.
Peak 70's prog rock self-indulgence

Purple are defined by “Smoke on the Water”, it’s the song people think when they think of them.
That’s life.
As is often the case they have ( in my opinion ) an absolute truckload of songs that are heaps better. The entire “Deep Purple in Rock” album as one example ( apart from “into the fire” perhaps )

There were a lot of songs that were overplayed on the radio back then & these days too... reckon you appreciate a song like this more when you haven't listened to it for a fair while.

@MN5 In Rock was the first purple album I bought.
I agree with you about SOTW (like Stairway to Heaven for Led Zep) but it's not even the best track on Machine Head.
Indeed. Fairly sure I’ve brought this up on here before. Both ‘signature songs’ are totally overplayed.
@NZbloke not sure how you’ve avoided ‘Smoke on the Water’ for years, I hear it all the time when channel surfing in the car !

@taniwharugby last action hero!!
-
@MajorRage when I heard it, it reminded me of the soundtrack for that, which also had Alice in Chains, Cypress Hill and others.
-
@taniwharugby and was the first place I heard one of my fave songs ever (Dream On)
Actually look at this … tracks 1-10 are sensational! Up there with Singles!

Good old fishbone. They’ll be thrilled to be in such company. The bassist from them gives online bass lessons on Facebook now.
Dream on is about Aerosmith’s only good song, Big Gun is a bit of a banger from AC/DC and Alice in Chains, Megadeth and Cypress Hill always deliver

Don't listen to that much music on the radio these days... prefer to choose my own selections.
