This article from Quincy Jones has always irked me a bit.
How do you define good / bad musicians? Ability to play a tune or ability to write a tune?
Ability to compose / put together a song, or ability to play a very complex time signature?
He can talk about Paul McCartney being a shitty bass player as much as he wants. But he owned Glastonbury this year playing bass, piano, guitar and singing. At 80 years old.
Quincy Jones opinion here is worth less than used toilet paper.
He can be kinda snob dickish in his opinions, but I like to hear from genius unfiltered, and I always listen to what he says, he’s a musical genius. He comes from a jazz background, and for him the height of musicianship I suspect is probably throwing sheet music in front of a band and having them nail it on first inspection in the company of an ensemble, and/or to improvise in a live performance. That has always been the highest aspiration of rock drummers like Ginger Baker and Bill Bruford and Charlie Watts, to be taken seriously as musicians by their jazz contemporaries. you just have to see the credits on his records to see the supremely highquality of musicans he employed, the highest paid studio session musicians in the business, who could nail a hit record in one take in the morning, record live big band arrangements with Sinatra for lunch, and then recording a movie soundtrack in the afternoon. He could get pretty psychedelic too.

Waylon. Now, see, that’s a man’s voice. A real man. Some damn fine pickin’, too.

In 1967 Tony Williams was 21 years old, and had already been a legend since he was a teenager. This made many rock drummers deeply insecure, they were in awe and could only dream to possess such talent.

Tears For Fears have some sonic masterpieces in their catalogue. Roland looks like a grey-haired Jesus now.
One of those groups way way better than their big hits suggest.

Lots of people agree with you on that one. I absolutely admire the craft behind the songs but tune out or turn off whenever I here something like 'Shout' come on. Can't stand it.

I'm more thinking how over-produced the era of the bigger hits like Shout, Mad World, Everybody... kind of wrecked their earlier 80s cred (to me) of songs like Change and Pale Shelter.

Can't stand 'Shout' to the point I have not given any of their other songs a chance. I am surprised to read a few of you rate them.

I wouldn’t say I can’t stand it but yeah, definitely yet another band who are so much better than their biggest hits.
I reckon this is one of their best, epic song

I'd agree with the hipster tag if I was picking and rating their stuff in retrospect but I was around through their early stuff and move to international success so this is from memories of hearing them at the time.
The Hurting was a big influence on the sound many NZ bands aspired to in the day but by the time things got to Songs from the Big Chair, looking back it helped create some absolutely dire 80s sounds. Producers had all sorts of new tools and techniques coming through and were extremely heavy handed with them.So much of the music in that mid 80s period could do with the source 24/48 track tapes being re-mixed and re-mastered.
We were all copying it as the latest thing but listening back, even to artists that I have stuck with, some of it is a painful listn. -
Not too many 2-minute pop songs come with a 45-second drum solo, but this one does. And you can dance to it. A classic.
