Canâ€™t even get the under 20â€™s into the semi finals.

New Zealand Rugby and the BNZ Crusaders are pleased to announce that Scott Robertson will replace Todd Blackadder at the helm of the Crusaders coaching team from 2017. 
 
Blackadder announced at the start of the 2016 season that it would be his last, sparking the process to appoint his successor. Former Crusaders, Canterbury and All Blacks loose forward Scott Robertson has been confirmed as the successful candidate to lead the team from 2017 through to 2019. 
 
Robertson is the current Head Coach of the Canterbury national provincial team, taking the job in 2013 and guiding the team to two Premiership titles in that role so far. He also assisted the team to five successive titles between 2008 and 2012, first as the Assistant Forwards Coach for four years and then as the Assistant Coach in 2012. 
 
He has also enjoyed success in his first year as Head Coach of the New Zealand Under 20 team, claiming victory at the 2015 Under 20 World Championship. Prior to that he was the forwards coach in 2014. Robertson is currently with the NZ Under 20 squad in Manchester. 
 
BNZ Crusaders CEO Hamish Riach says Robertson has the credentials and vision to be an outstanding Investec Super Rugby coach. 
 
â€œScott is a highly skilled coach who we believe is absolutely ready for the step up to Super Rugby. He has been an important contributor to the incredible success that the Canterbury team has enjoyed over the past eight years and he has also earned respect on the world stage as Head Coach of the New Zealand Under 20 team,â€ Mr Riach said. 
 
â€œWe had a highly contested process with some exceptional candidates, so that made it a very difficult decision in some ways. However, we are very excited about what Scott Robertson offers this team and thrilled to be appointing him to the role.â€ 
 
Robertson said taking on the Head Coach role would be like a dream come true. 
 
â€œThis is a team I have played for, am passionate about and looking forward to leading. The Head Coach of the Crusaders is regarded as one of the best jobs in the world, so I couldnâ€™t be more excited to be taking it on.

Can't say I'm overwhelmed by this appointment - I probably would have preferred Dave Hewett, but I'm a long way from making an informed assessment.
 
Let's hope Razor is better than his recent efforts with the Under 20s suggest - and that Dave Hewett sticks around as forwards coach.
 
Be interesting to see what happens with Schmidt from here. I guess if he rocks up as coach of Bay of Plenty, we can conclude that the Crusaders passed up on him and can judge accordingly.
 
Overall, our recent Super coach appointments haven't been overwhelming - Tana, Boyd, Reluctant Tony Brown, Razor. These guys are all a fair step away from AB-ready coaches - indicative that the big guns are reading the writing on the wall that Hansen is signing on for 2019 and Foster has both feet in the door for afterwards?

The thing that's a bit underwhelming to me is that if we've been leaving no stone unturned in digging up a new coach, we've pretty much ended up with the default that Sammy identified in post #2 of the thread.
 
It's far from a surprising appointment, but I would have been more excited with a big gun coach - particularly if they'd announced that Robbie was returning! :)

I've been impressed when hearing Scott talk about the game and his approach to coaching. Had no idea about the underbelly of selection bias etc in terms of Canterbury but from an outsiders perspective I reckon he's paid his dues and worked through the system.

He might be new but at least he's been a head coach!!

With one of the best teams we've seen in years (and some pretty good coaches around him, too). 
 
This year, with a team that has a reasonable amount of talent, they looked terrible. He basically decided that we should run at all costs, from all areas of the field, despite the torrential rain. It is all well and good wanting to play expansive rugby, but at least try and go about it smarter than that.

while the path he has tread to get to where he has is one people want more so compared to some others that get appointments, but you could argue with the cattle he has had at his disposal, those results were expected anyway, aside from this year.
 
So while on the surface underwhelming, guess we will have to see what he does next year, especially without the crusaders main strike weapon.

 I coulda sworn Dave Rennie had two Super titles with the Chiefs, an NPC title with Wellington, and three consecutive World U20 titles with the Baby Blacks.
 
Edit: And oh yeah, as TR said, a recent annihilation of a top tier international side.

My guess is Cantabfan4life79 was meaning at time of appointment his credentials were better...but then as I said above, the expectations were to win anyway, it wasn't like he took a team like NH and made them into the team they should be with their resources.

I'll tell you what I wanted.
 
A bloke like Schmidt, Cotter or Deans. International experience and a man manager.
 
Or even Rob Penny. But it's pretty obvious he doesn't suck the right c##k to even be considered.
 
At least when he was coach of Canterbury he was out watching club rugby every weekend, same with Deans and Wayne Smith for that matter.
 
The only time I've seen Robertson is at the odd Sumner game, and he was acting like a total buffoon.
