I'll just have to take your word for it then.

    Take Foster's

Ian Foster explains why Jordie Barrett has been selected at No 12 in new midfield

Ian Foster explains why Jordie Barrett has been selected at No 12 in new midfield

The unlikely battle for New Zealand's third choice No 12 has been settled, with Ian Foster naming Jordie Barrett to start in the midfield.

As for Barrett’s strengths that translate well for him in the midfield, Foster complimented his broad skillset.

“He’s a strong carrier, aggressive defender, can kick and a good communicator.”

    As for passing

Jordie Barrett throws ridiculous NFL-style pass in Mitre 10 Cup | Rugbydump

Jordie Barrett throws ridiculous NFL-style pass in Mitre 10 Cup | Rugbydump

All Blacks and Hurricanes star Jordie Barrett showed off his American football skills during round one of the Mitre 10 Cup clash for Taranaki.

Accepting Foster's word on player quality?

    Oh, the irony.

    All in all a v.good performance, something that is expected of the AB’s. Now they need to back it up next week. So much good stuff;

    • JB looks to be a fixture in the 12 jersey with another v.good performance. It allows Beaudy to play 15 and have 3 playmakers plus a huge boot to take the pressure off Richie.
    • Ardie is incredible, just a beast. What else can you say? Aaron Smith only a fraction behind
    • Forwards were dominant, great to see
    • Papali’i was v.good. Balanced backrow with Savea and Frizell

Seriously, this was not the game nor the conditions for passing. I'm pretty certain he showed glimpses of a lovely passing game in his first start at 12 for the ABs but don't have evidence handy.

This. Don't need spectacular, just competent.

Yeah better off throwing up his hurricanes highlights where there's a handful of lovely decisions - but these videos by their nature aren't going to show his assists.

One thing that has always impressed me with Jordie is that he is strong passing L-R or R-L

Ain't nobody arguing this. Far and away the best option at 12, especially when weighed with the subsequent fall off (or not) at 15.

    DH/RTS 12 and JB 15?

    Or

    JB 12 and BB 15?

Its option 2 thanks, every time 👌

The only spanner in the works is whether they want to try ALB/Rieko in the midfield.

    Thoughts on that???

For me, passing or no passing, JB seems to be doing something that we haven't seen for some time, that is getting our team onto the front foot from MF. So he is the first name on the sheet in MF and the others can fight it out. He creates space simply by virtue of the fact that he sucks the D line in, as opposed to what we were doing before. RI and ALB are two different styles of player. SLB has only come back from injury, bring him off the bench while we give the RM/JB/RI axis a chance to see what they can do

How good was our clean out. It was exactly what I've been wanting to see for some time. The forwards were clinically brutal shifting any opposition from the breakdown area

    Keeping things narrower probably helped.

BTW, a reliable source has said that McLeod also had poor performance reviews last year. For some reason he has escaped scrutiny. I think it's vital that he is replaced in the off-season.

On GBU podcast Shane Horgan opined that AB defence was below NH international standards. Obvious point of weakness.

Funny (ish) that Jordie had 13 runs, but Clarke and Reece and Rieko had 10 between them.

For all those on the JB wagon (I'm there, settle down), he's sure as fuck not the messiah at 12.

In most years past, we would be bagging a player like him for being a "crash ball merchant", having no distribution or vision...

It's symptomatic of the poor quality of our other options that he's getting so much love at the moment.

Again, I'm an advocate I'd definitely pick him at 12 in a RWC Final tomorrow. But he has massive work ons.

Of big concern, is that we really don't have anyone in our current A backing capable, or at least intent on, putting someone else into space

Jordie per above. Rieko is certainly a run-first centre. Clarke trips over his own feet when confronted by a tackler. Reece is a dancer, keeps his head down.

Beaudy I guess is the only one?

JB is far more than a crash and bash merchant. That was clearly the tactic yesterday. Claiming he has no distribution or vision is taking it a tad far 🤨

Could he be more? Maybe, hopefully, possibly likely!

Has he been more? Well, no.

Is that the only game you've ever seen him play?

Yes mate. That's it, just the one.

    Come on.

I know you've been waiting for this moment for a long time. And I'm happy for you, and I genuinely hope it works out, I really, really do.

And I'm totally on board with JB being our best option at 12 for now and the RWC next year.

BUT - I'm fully aware of his limitations. He isn't a great distributor, and he's not great at setting up his outsides.

We can go back and forth if you want, but I can't see you moving me on those points.

Yep, he runs hard and straight, and he defends well. And that's why I would pick him at 12. But we have to be cognisant of his limitations.

What is obvious is that his height and weight several times gave us two or three metres extra post contact gain which we haven’t had previously. Huge effect on speed and security of subsequent ball.

Tricky one for the Foster Co Op.

Do they stick with Reiko and hope he continues to improve or use ALB who, IMHO, is a world class centre with all the smarts but who lacks Reiko's pace? Will Reiko kick on with the solidity Jordie seems to provide at 12?

My guess is they'll use Reiko at 13 and ALB off the bench as they seem to favour continuity.

How many meters Frizell made with ball in hand ? If you remove the ones he lost when he was on the backfoot, the number should be very low. He has a big workrate, that's for sure, but his impact is not as great as the TV commentators tend to insist on. For those who are not on the Akira Ioane's bandwagon, there is MMT. He could be the answer for the 6 jersey.
