So you equate fun with not caring about the health of your kids? If you do even a smidgen of research about how diet affects future potential (particularly in the first few years) you'd think twice before feed kids that young stuff that's barely food.
No of course not mate, when did I say that? I was simply saying that it's not a big deal to let a kid enjoy Maccas now and then and certainly not something to criticise parents for. I agree entirely that very regular outings to junk food places is similar to child abuse and that the effect on kids can be shocking. My son walks to kindy most days which is a 2+km round trip and he's always running around. The odd chicken nugget with fries is not going to harm his development.
After five, sure, an occasional treat is fine (and I agree with your once a month routine too) but I've seen two year olds in Maccas downing handfuls of fries downing it with coke. Those kids are stuffed at school later on with reduced concentration and lower potential. Great parenting.
Totally agree.
I'm proud of my parenting, the fact that my kid prefers fruit and vegetables when offered something sweet is an achievement these days IMO
That is a great achievement, no its a farking great achievement. However, I'm always concerned about the "Rod and Todd Effect" (Flanders' kids on the Simpsons who go nuts when they eat sugar) whereby if you never give kids any sweets or the occasional junk food they will overcompensate and go bananas when they get the opportunity to.

So we are violently agreeing? Cool.

It's not like the boy never has sugar (He has Aunties that I have very little control over, and he's just had a 2nd birthday) just that we've made an effort to give our kids a better diet that we have...

I was perhaps a little over the top in my first post, but had just seen said kid scoffing fries and it pissed me off.

Whats the massive deal about McDonalds? There burgeras are no worse than any other junk food. I think they get a bum rap by the soccer mum brigade, usually the same ones who refuse to vacinate their children..... I am not saying McDonalds is good for you, but the reality is it is probably healthier than a lot of crap kids shovel into thier mouths.
And dont start on the marketing to children malarky... every single junk food company pulls that stunt.

Having said that, my son wont be having McDonalds until he is going to school.. and even then only as a very special treat, but the same applies that he wont be eating much other junk food either.

McDonalds/Junk Food/whatever, it's as label and an example. I agree that McDonalds is no worse than any of the others, but as the most successful it's easy shorthand for the discussion. Oh and McDs markets more aggressively to children than the others, how many Burger Kings/KFCs do you see with a playground?

And don't start me on the bloody idiots that don't vaccinate their kids. We got the letter from daycare the other day warning about a measles outbreak. FFS.

If ya have to have Maccas the trick is to avoid the chips if at all possible. They're shockingly bad for you !

Supposedly the thicker the chips the relatively better/less bad they are for you, shoestring fries the worst up to wedges the least worst.

Yeah I've heard chunky chips are way less bad for you. I think its true as well, I feel far less dodgy after eating them.

String fries absorb more fat when frying than "traditional' chips

Apparently chocolate coated tiny teddies are the worst kids treat gram for gram out there and if I recall correctly the double whopper with cheese from BK was the most artery hardening item of crap from out of KFC, BK and maccas.

Kirwin was that at Chelsea House? My boy stopped going there a few months back ,but there' s no shortage of dullards on the coast who'll piously bleat to you about vaccinating your kids being the fourth sign of the apocolypse.
