@nzzp yeah I just seen a pic of the Coromandel one from the other side and looks the same....but still, that road, where ever it is, aint being fixed anytime soon.

the Brynderwyns are better quality rock I think generally... but still not good.

My brother's place has been yellow stickered. Northcote Point took a real hammering. Much of the eastern side has slipped into the sea.

What with the on again, off again Waka Kotahi purchase and now this - he's better off if his house goes I reckon and get an insurance payout. Resale value of a cliff top house with a history of slips and compulsory purchase orders is not going to be great. Even with views to er... die for.

Spoke to a FENZ guy on saturday. I don't think I have ever seen a more exhausted bloke in all my life.

@Machpants it came from someone in the local fire service, so would hope they have an accurate pic...looks like it could be on the section on the south side of the waterfall.

Yeah that is a pic of S25A aka Kopu Hikawai. Been cracked and running as stop/go for the past few weeks. Totally shat itself now.

A decent bit of work to fix - and a bridge seems the obvious solution to this non-engineering fella too

The roads really have taken an absolute hammering over the last 6 months or so. Cant remember so many washouts and slips on the thames coast ever. S25A has had a lot of slips too and now whenever that closes, the Thames Coromandel council want to close to 309 and Tapu Coroglen roads which whilst gravel aren't too bad....but not when you have that much traffic on it.

We've had a ton of rain though - castle rock has had over 1000ml for January 2023 and 480ml of that in just the last 4 days. That really is extreme levels.

Ohh, that's a good one. We had a smaller one where they had to build up and stabilise the down slope, then the upslope. Took ages to reopen.

@antipodean is a section of the Mangamukas south of Kaitaia that I believe is still not open from August last year, and that had only recently reopened from another storm a year or so earlier.

We (most of Northland it seems) got away pretty much unscathed overnight, I am concerned about this big bright object in the sky though, I think the end is nigh!

full rebuilds will be interesting as with the rapid increases in the costs of building materials along with the change to sum insured replacement a few years ago people might be well underinsured for replacement building costs.

@WillieTheWaiter I'd say very likely, especially when you take into account todays cost and when many repairs will be settled, some will be upto 2 years or more before completion I expect.

Immigration gonna need to import some tradies

It would have been more convenient if it ended up at Maccas or BK

There are some absolute scum about.

At the weekend a gang targeted the stickered houses at the tip of Northcote Point.

What with Waka Kotahi purchasing all bar two of them and then the cliff slipping into the sea all bar a couple were vacant.

They broke into my brother's garage and house and left every door and window open, but he didn't have anything of value. They certainly made sure of it though all his storage cartons were ripped open. Didn't even take any booze. At least they didn't trash the place.

The scum comment relates to the Neighbour's who are still living there. They held a knife to an old guy's throat and got his missus to hand over cash, credit cards, electronics and jewelry.

If only they'd walked on to my brother's deck. Could have done him and society a favour if they'd caused it to crash into the sea.

@dogmeat apparently it is just tropical depression 14U at this time, expected to become a Tropical Cyclone later today...

Be fucking great if it just fucking died.

From what I have read/watched, the big fuck off systems that sit over Australia are often the reason shite like this will veer away from Aus toward NZ, so we can actually blame Aus!
