But basically 'the left' has egalitarianism as a base and builds on top of that. 'The right' has a greater acceptance that hierarchies are natural and unavoidable. Those positions provide fault lines across many issues
I think the issue is many traditional left-wing parties are less interested in egalitarianism than in protecting their powerbase. They might profess to abolish, elite, private education - but only when their kids have completed theirs.
Or as a famously right-wing, working-class politician once said: "My family isn't wealthy enough to be socialists"
-
I think a really good example of the left vs the modern left is in this video. Jess Philips, is a Labour MP here who is pretty solid. She's not completely avert to brain farts / silly opinions, but I think she holds views and fights for things from a left perspective.
Owen Jones, is pretty much so the poster boy of the modern left. You either agree with him, and his progressive views, or your a bigot / hateful etc etc. Guy is a complete fluffybunny, who I genuinely think is a caricature as he makes a pretty decent living by being forever angry at people who make a pretty decent living.
Anyway, ignore his bullshit start/end and watch from 40 seconds to 4:20.

Whilst lefties are more inclined to lean towards "being kind" I just don't get the left-right divide in social issues. More "misplaced kindness" v "rational thought".
I don't think the Left lean towards "kindness". There's way more intolerance IMHO
Hope I'm making sense.
Shiraz ..Depends on the age of the Shiraz
You'll note "kindness" is in the brackets.

@MajorRage It's actually the ten seconds from 4:20-4:30 where she gets a good shot in at him.
As for the rest I wouldn't say she owned him. He's just an annoying little twat who knows everything. Nothing he can't grow out of.
How your political views are defined depends on where the person making the definition sits on the political spectrum.
I've never heard of either of those people, but I can readily believe that the twat thinks the MP is right wing. At the same time someone like Rees Mogg might see her as hard left.

Flutracking shows that Flu/Covid is still tracking way lower this year than it was pre pandemic. Despite predictions NZ would have an apocalyptic winter in 2022 because of the border shutdown, flu cases were lower than 2019.

I don't think she owned him (the title of the video is his), the point of the video is to show the difference between a classic leftie (Philips) and the new left breed of "I'm right about everything".
He's 38. And he's made a great living by by criticising and abusing everybody to the right of him. He will never change & is typical of why global societies are so divided.
How your political views are defined depends on where the person making the definition sits on the political spectrum.
Exactly. But, at least in social media, there is no debate anymore. You either agree or are hateful.
I've never heard of either of those people, but I can readily believe that the twat thinks the MP is right wing. At the same time someone like Rees Mogg might see her as hard left.
Ironically, the thing I like about Phlips, is that she genuinely explores the other side of politics & did a drive around with Rees Mogg! To bring this back to NZ politics, my sister is heavily involved and she was telling me a few years ago that most NZ politicians were genuinely friendly to each other and would debate / discuss issues over bottles of wine out of the spotlight. Said that doesn't happen anymore and there seems to be a genuine dislike of each other due to their views.
It's a global issue. Politicians should be showing the world that "it's ok to disagree". But they are doing the opposite, with cretins like Jones fuelling it.

As @MajorRage has mentioned, Philips & Rees-Mogg are good friends, have both visited each others wildly-different constituencies and gone down well with locals who found out these shouty lefty & rich toff MPs were actually approachable, normal human beings who genuinely cared about doing their job well.
It's clickbaitpricks like Jones and fluffybunny MPs like Angela Rayner who think hating someone for their political views is cool and virtuous who are the problem.

They are rightly getting roasted in the replies to this, and I know they are just quoting one "expert", but a few takeaways:
-
it sounds like the government had things set up to "stop the spread of disinformation" during Covid. I'd be interested to know what steps they took to do this. No doubt it included stopping genuine bullshit, but it also very likely included anyone that was against lockdowns and vaccine mandates, which is a difference of opinion rather than disinformation.
-
he says the spread of disinformation after the Posie Parker visit was the worst he's ever seen, but then makes up an excuse so he doesn't have to give any examples. I'd really like to have some examples here, as the vast majority of disinformation (God I hate that new word they've started using) is from the Trans movement that make crazy claims like trans women are women and men don't have inherent physical advantages over women.
-
his entire focus is on the right, as if there's never been any disinformation spread by the far left ever, it's only the right that does that, which is obviously an insane position to take if you have even a high level understanding of history.
There really is a concerted effort from the left to restrict freedom of speech at the moment, with strong backing from our mainstream media.

@No-Quarter
Creepy stuff.
A favorite tactic of the modern left or those sympathetic to it
Biden tried to set up a Disinformation Governance Board in July of 2022 and the outcry was so great they abandoned it. -

@MN5 FFS - you're stretching more than a little if you use Greta and Meghan to illustrate the validity of your argument.
I'd never seen , or indeed heard of, Elizabeth Kerekere until this little imbroglio.
What is it with Green MP's - Do they have to look like a character out of a child's storybook?

I was thinking more like a character from a Tim Burton film but I can see where you’re coming from .
She was previously known for this , she takes a few references and makes them fit into the narrative she wants to push .
The article reads like parody , particularly the part about homophobia being a colonial construct and the reason a missionary was sent home after admitting to blowing 100 young Maori men. Sounds like the guy was a predatory sex addict but that could be just my post colonial homophobia speaking . Anyway the lies by omission, leaps of logic and twisting facts to suit her narrative in this article sun up this ridiculous person quite well. -
A 12 week wait for treatment when you have 6-8 weeks to live. Six years ago we were a proper country ffs.

Yeah, all I know about him is that people don't like him. He's clearly funny, should send him a link to the Grumpy Old Man thread.
