Could go in a number of threads, but this is probably the most apt.

So I've been building this business (within a business) for 5 years now, and due to various things, it's got off to a very very slow start. Took us 3 years to launch (should have been 1, but Covid delayed us 2) and then since then growth has been hamstrung by beauracratic stuff. Fine, I knew it when I signed up so accepted it.

Anyway, around a month ago, we got in two good sized clients in quick time & our business went from 0-10 transactions per day to 400-600. Exactly what we've been after and things work exactly as expected. Of course there has been a few hiccups / issues that we've had to solve, but I would honestly say there have been less than what I predicted. So I'm pretty happy.

Naturally, this means I've been working some not so social hours (TSF time has really suffered) and had to deal with a lot of crap. But I'd still say the longest day I've done is probably 12 hours & I've consistently shouldered the load and been happy to be held to account. It's all good.

We've just lost a junior staff member to stress leave.

Sometime's you've just got to laugh.

fuck i could go on a long and spittle-flecked rant about stress leave

the people that seem to take it never seem to be the ones that should actually be stressed (the exact fucking situation you describe) or it's used when they are being disciplined for performance.

And it always results in more stress for management, more work for everyone else, and then if they go for workcover, time spend defending it as bullshit

    fuck your stress leave

And the new workplace legislation here that has is taking in to consideration an employees circumstances outside of work is just fucked.

I think that's a great idea. I wonder if I can convince my boss to take into account the twin facts that

    • after long decades of 60+ hours / week, I'm pretty much over it
    • the DM beer fund still needs to be supported

a nice cushy little sinecure would be very much appreciated Mr Boss Man

What's that you say? Hired? Yes of course I'm hired....

    Oh...

I should add a bit of context - the bloke seriously needed to go out on the stress leave. He lost 6kg in 16 days apparently. He was a complete wreck.

I'm grumpy, because all that happened was we had a busy few days and had to make a few adjustment. He mentally, which subsequently physically, couldn't handle it.

    It's truly astonishing.

That is ridiculous. Just over half that is about right provided it’s good quality work.

I must say whilst it’s not appropriate talk in this thread we have it pretty sweet today in terms of work life balance, being able to work from home so much easier.

Flip side of that of course is you feel obliged to reply to important emails when you’re trying to get quality fern time in. It’s a balancing act.

Yeah, 60 hrs is generally unhealthy, unproductive and, if you're an employer, a profit-killer. Can't remember what the research exactly says but think around 35-38 is the optimum

That said, depends on the nature of the job. My happiest and probably most productive work periods were when I was doing 50, sometimes 55 hr weeks. Was working for myself though.

A good employer would do that anyway to get the best our of his/her people. Encourage good employment practice - not legislate employers as social workers.

No. I noticed he was struggling and had been keeping an eye on him with regular convos as well.

So your business is a roaring success, you had to work a bit hard, but solved all the problems and are no doubt profiting handsomely as the owner. With your biggest problem being someone quit.

This should be in the not-so-subtle gloating thread.

The worse take I think I've seen on TSF. Got a chip or something?

Barely any of the above is true, nor implied.

I get the feeling that research was based on self selected survey responses. From people who'd rather not work.

Some years back on another gig I was FIFO fixing a program of work for one of Australia's top four banks. A meeting with a project manager explaining what needed to be done and by when, he complained about the long days. He shut up after I told him I had already done 40 hours that week and it was still Wednesday.

That being said, I don't believe in activity over accomplishment. If you're not needed, do something more rewarding for that time.

Yeah, the implication being they're just smart enough to realise they're actually going to have to do some "work" in order to receive ongoing remuneration.

    I'm thinking public servants.

Did some work for a local council in East London years ago. Was taken aback by the laziness, incompetence and general desire to ensure that nothing actually worked.

Pretty sure the bloke who headed up the division (he was outstanding BTW) saw his role as keeping these people safely away from real-world employment and minimising the damage they could do there....
