The respected Harlequins attack coach gives his verdict on Steve Borthwick's England as they look to stage a turnaround in form

Nick Evans discussing the RWC. Lots of emphasis on England because he worked with them during the 6Ns

@MiketheSnow Jerome is still looking in good shape, I didn't know he was coaching now. Even two years retired from playing I'd rather start him than any of our 6 options.

There was an earlier discussion about how the ABs would be traveling from Lyon to Paris. Newshub are saying that the majority of the teams will be using the TGV where possible to minimise emissions.

"More than 80 percent of the team movements being high-speed rail and therefore hugely reduced air travel, which will always be a huge impact, has been really important," said World Rugby chief executive Alan Gilpin.

I rate Mack Hansen, but I'm not sure Ireland have the capability to teartge minnows apart.

World Rugby has announced Colour Blindness in Rugby guidelines that will become policy for World Rugby tournaments from January 2025. I've already posted about this in the Law trials & changes threads, where you can find the links to the documents, but some of it will be relevant for this RWC.

For Rugby World Cup 2023, World Rugby has worked closely with the Participating Unions and CBA to encourage certain kit combinations in an effort to avoid kit ‘clashes’ - where kit colours appear too similar to colour blind people due to a lack of sufficient colour contrast or designs - where possible while being mindful of manufacturing and commercial considerations.

In some rare cases, an alternate kit may still pose a challenge if there is not enough colour or design differential. Such was the possibility for the Portugal v Wales Group C encounter on 16 September in Nice where the Welsh alternate kit (black) would have clashed with Portugal's primary kit (dark red). In a move applauded by World Rugby as a positive display of the sport’s values and support for inclusivity, both Portugal and Wales have confirmed they will each wear their alternative kit in support of the cause. Other participating teams have also committed to show their support by wearing alternate jerseys for certain games including Georgia, Ireland, Tonga and South Africa.

Kit testing was undertaken alongside broadcast kit testing early in 2023 on the RWC 2023 Primary and Alternate kits of each team plus the match officials kits to ensure maximum contrast between the kits of both teams and match officials. In some instances preferred kit combinations were changed due to perceived lack of contrast for broadcast reasons for all viewers.

With player welfare in mind, kits were also considered not just from the perspective of fans watching on TV or in the stadium but also from the perspective of any colour blind players and match officials.

In some instances kits might be easy to differentiate from a distance by fans due to different coloured shorts, but as players and match officials need to be able to instantly see differences in rugby shirt colours in their peripheral vision, kits with differences in short colours only will be avoided wherever possible during RWC 23. For some matches, the decision has also been taken to change sock colours to avoid potential confusion by match officials.

Off the pitch, steps have also been taken to ensure sufficient colour differentiation in areas like ticketing, accreditation, venue and directional signage, digital platforms and others.

South AfricanScottish gun Duhan Van Der Merwe is a good shout. 20 in 31 tests so far.

Scottish pool might be a bit tough to have a top try scorer come out of it.

Stan is claiming they're broadcasting in 4K UHD which is 2160p IIRC?

I assume it will be, it's generally 50fps for the rugby on Stan.

I'm fucking glad Kayo don't have it, they'd probably run it at 720p.

@Nepia Sometimes rugby is rebroadcast at 50fps, but is shot at 25fps (Super Rugby). Hopefully this will be genuine high frame rate.

    What's all this about then?

(livestream on Stuff starts at 5.45am, kickoff at 7.15am)

... this looks like actual coverage of the game, but... how have I not heard about this before? Is it just because I'm a hermit, or... am I misinterpreting this?

    Edit:

A dedicated multimedia hub located on Stuff features 12 streamed games, including live coverage of the opening match between the All Blacks and France, two quarterfinals, a semifinal and the RWC final, ...

... and all the AB pool matches delayed.
But - they seem to be keeping it remarkably quiet - presumably as part of the deal with Sky.

I must I am very impressed with Stan’s rugby options. The back catalogue of content is great, can’t really recall an error or problem with the steaming function or the app itself.

Yeah, I think I've had maybe two errors, contrast that with Kayo which is freaking terrible. I don't think I've watched a Warriors match that hasn't dropped down to 480p at some time, glitched, bounced back a few seconds etc.

Games will indeed be livestreamed on the Stuff website, in addition to their live blogs.

Watching the weekend preview on Stan here in Oz

Michael Hooper is part of the broadcast team.

He’s just a really fucken good guy, and was an absolute warrior for the Wallabies.

And Foxtel want you to be grateful to the point of you licking Uncle Rupert's wrinkly old taint.
