<p>Easily the best butterfly swimmer ever. His longevity in the sport is astonishing. To be good enough to swim freestyle and win gold medals at that too makes him the best swimmer ever IMO. And that's before you acknowledge he's put in the effort to master side stroke and doggy paddle for the medley events (where near half his Olympic gold medals come from).</p>

<p>And that's really the issue: He's not the fastest across distances. He's the fastest doing slower shit.</p>
