have doubts that Sam Wells, as an age and Otago Volts contemporary of Wagner, may be too close. (Let alone the obvious player power on selections by the senior players)

It does look like the black Caps team is "jobs for the boys".

Maybe (I don't know what he's been doing since he retired). The other probable explanation, to me, is they want a guy with a profile too low to challenge the current leadership. They wouldn't want an e.g. Stephen Fleming in that role with enough mana to win actual difficult, but necessary, selection arguments.

My 11 for next test. I still go with 4 seamers at home.

    Latham
    Ravindra
    Williamson
    Conway
    Mitchell
    Phillips
    Blunders
    Jamieson
    Henry
    Southee
    O'Rourke

Although it is 2 or 3 months away, so have to see how O'Rourke goes in his white ball opportunities.

Absolutely must, for me, that we move on from Wagner now, but have doubts that Sam Wells, as an age and Otago Volts contemporary of Wagner, may be too close. (Let alone the obvious player power on selections by the senior players)

Any reason Conway is being demoted ? Didn’t shine vs Bangladesh but who really did ?

Is Ravindra really an opening option at test level ?

    Conway should stay opening,
Too tough a gig throwing Ravindra in to opening in tests different game than white ball by quite a stretch.
let Ravindra find his feet in the lower middle order and work his may up, which is normally the way Test cricket teams are selected unless you are an established opener.

Not particularly. Any of 3 out of those guys can open, any of the 3 would have merit dropping to middle order (e.g Latham being good v spin, Conway being the least specialist opener, Ravindra being the pup.

I chose Conway as not being the specialist, but not a hill I'd die on.

As Long as it isn't a Ravindra at 7 and everyone shuffle up 1 spot. That would make me pull my hair out. Need clear messaging on roles.

Ravindra can take the 5 spot. We get zero production out of it anyway

200 on debut is pretty handy for an opener. I think they need to keep him there despite a ( relatively ) lean patch since then.

Phillips being the all rounder ( either that or batsman who bowls a bit ) or Blundell should take the seven spot.

But to be less glib & pedantic .

I'd keep Mitchell at 5, with the attacking license.

Make a top 4 with Ravindra in it somewhere.

I would have Mitchell at 4 he has earned the right to bat up.
More time at the crease for Mitchell is better for the team.
3 and 4 are prime batting spots in test cricket.

Speak for yourself. See my post above. I thought it was “great”.

Don’t want that every time out, but it’s good to see batsmen struggle occasionally. Also it was pretty consistent throughout so it was fair to both sides.

Speaking for fans mostly. In this day and age a grafting 50 in tough conditions is no where near as appreciated as it should be.

Due to 20/20s and the evolution of ODIs people want to see huge scores. I will admit that there seems to be far more results than in the past on account of quicker scoring rates but the finish to this test was certainly pretty compelling stuff.

I'm not convinced that people always want to see huge scores rather than enthralling contests, but I shall bow to the spokesperson of the masses 😉

I blame the big bash. Fans are so uncouth and there’s barely a gin and tonic in sight.

Plebs. Letting that sort of riff raff into the game leads to matches being decided by boundary countbacks.

So, what do you lot think about the newbies? I don't get to see much domestic stuff.

    BLACKCAPS v Bangladesh ODIs

    Tom Latham (c)
    Adi Ashok* (games 2 & 3)
    Finn Allen
    Tom Blundell
    Mark Chapman
    Josh Clarkson*
    Jacob Duffy
    Kyle Jamieson
    Adam Milne
    Henry Nicholls
    Will O’Rourke*
    Rachin Ravindra
    Ish Sodhi (game 1)
    Will Young
    *Potential ODI debut

You could line them all up in a row and I’d have no idea who was who.

Then I’d frantically do some googling of their stats and try and do a post based on that and make out I know what I’m talking about.
