Slow Horses series 3. Still great but last 2 episodes slipped a bit.

The fight inside the bunker was bloody awful. Telegraphed action sequences and just got boring. Reminded me of some american B-movie where the rogue CIA agent saves the world. Final episode was saved by Lamb's rescue of Standish - brilliant.

Yeah, I felt the same with the last two eps kind of not seeming very Slow Horses like.

TBH, I didn't have an issue with the private contractors being not as good as they think they are. But, I would have made Donovan's mate ex SAS and then had those two do most of the shooting.

I also thought that the sometime comic relief dog, the bald headed one, would have seen that they were in the wrong and then turned on the private contractor guy ... but then we wouldn't have got that entire scene at the house.

Still a great show, and definitely in my top 5 for the year.

Oldman might just be the best actor out there, he inhabits a role in a way other hyped actors don't. A guy like Phoenix get's hyped for this "method" style but he just plays that same style in every role. Oldman is the character he plays.

Would be a toss up between him and Daniel Day Lewis for me.

Robert De Niro and Al Pacino are brilliant at what they do but there’s a real sameness to their characters compared to those two

I think it's fairly common knowledge I'm not in the DDL is the greatest actor camp (from Gangs of NY on, pre that then I'd agree he was great) - I find he leans more to Phoenix's style than to Oldman's, where you can see the acting strings.

Denzel is similar in that he's a mix between DDL and De Niro and Pacino, he used to inhabit roles, but now he essentially plays Denzel, which like those latter to is brilliant but with a sameness.

I really struggle to take him that seriously because I can’t get this character out of my mind.

The shoot out in the latest episode of Reacher was particularly retarded.

Agreed. You can tell it's him, but I can't think of many roles which could be clear substitutions in another movie. Even with his amount of work, there's sufficient differences between those characters that feels like he isn't simply playing Gary Oldman.

Which gives rise to an interesting discussion about good actors versus those who are good at portraying different characters.

    Archer
    Series finale

The series felt like it went off the rails for a little while there - I typically still enjoyed it even in the "Coma seasons" - except perhaps the first episode of Dreamland - but yeah, it had it's problems

But this was a good send-off... just enough call-backs to the pilot episode, and everything in-between - to work, but without seeming too forced. And enough hints at shit, but un-answered questions, to match the general theme of some of the relevant underlying gags.

    Suitable finale... approved.

Two to choose from as well.

I'm a little underwhelmed by S2. Not enough meat on the bones of the characters and no amount of 30 second flashbacks is going to cure that. The feisty NY cop is just a parody of the fat one in Person of Interest. The really bad guy that offs people with a 3" knife all the time has no depth either.

However Ep4 was saved by the sight of Karla Dixon in a very skimpy dress around 24m in. Many thanks for the heads up @Victor-Meldrew

3 more Eps to go. I will continue but am now having doubts about Season 3.

@Catogrande yeah, the plot is pretty stupid too. They should stuck to him going to a corrupt small town and beating everyone up.

    Just watched it. Monumentally bad.

Two professional shooters can't take out four people at range running straight at them armed only with pistols?

Almost as bad as four people can't shoot the shit out of car and harm the occupants.

This is looking like they should've stopped at the first season.

    Best TV Shows of 2023

Up to Episode 4, Slow Horses was far & away the best of 23 for me.

But two lethargic horses to finish season 3 put The Gold top of my list.

Binged it the past two days.

Over a quarter of my favs were on Apple TV interestingly

Not much to choose from (compared with other providers) but high quality.
