Most importantly, both sides survived the hitout without any major injury problems

Both coaches reported a relatively clean bill of health, with the Chiefs unscathed and the Blues picking up only a couple of head knocks to forwards James Thompson and Ed Annandale.

Apart from Telea, the rest of the returning players looked rusty. Many will be underdone for the Rd 1 game.

O'Keeffe is still public enemy no.1 for the Chiefs.

As for the commentary, who was the other guy with McOnie?

Same. Life is too short to listen to middle aged men try to act like teenagers.

I think McOnie is 50. So he's older than many of the fathers of the teenagers they want to attract

A fat 50 year old who jokes never land, making repetitive references to a 41 year old movie will solve the yoof issue for NZR. Or how about the joke about that up and coming band Soul Asylum?

Also if you are going to have two commentators obnoxiously cheer for one team over the other (because they are super chiefs fans!) they should at least know the names of half the Chiefs players on the field

Then there was cutting away from the ball in play to show the faces of the 'talent'

The coverage was a disaster. I hope this won't be the standard of the games broadcast on NZR.

For all the talk about the Chiefs being favorites for the title this year, their pre-season form has been awful.

Which one kept saying “Chiefs mana” in a stupid way? That was annoying the bejesus out of me.

I found the quips about the ginga players needing sunscreen quite offensive on a personal level too.

I guess NZR is trying to be "different" but what I will generously call the "jocular" commentary combined with the sub standard production made the entire thing look like an amateur shambles.

"Cringe" is what I think the hip young youth of today call it...
