All two ( or three ) readers of my fitness blog will know I've just returned from a trip to Rarotonga and one of the highlights was a trip to the brewery there.

I went in with pretty low expectations which were pretty undue, their beer is actually really good and the story behind it is cool. They've been going for ten years which is excellent for a small business on the island and for a place not much bigger than a typical kiwi backyard shed they produce a lot of quality beer. They target the tourist market as it's a little bit too expensive for most of the locals. Granted there are always gonna be foreigners who want to grab a Heinie or Corona at the pub as fast as they can but for those who actually like to get a bit adventurous with brews their beers are really drinkable and have a certain intangible something that I really liked.

I used to go have a look around the brewery and fill up our plastic bottles with beer for the week on trips to Raro. We mostly just wound up talking rugby and league with the guys.

Last year when I went back we were told you had to pay for the tour now, is that correct? Also, when you could fill up whatever plastic bottle you had lying around it was cheap as chips so the locals would all drink it as well. Maybe they've just raised their prices?
-

I'm not sure, that does seem a very "Raro" thing to do though. The tours are at 12 and 1 every day and it's 10 bucks or 15 bucks to be picked up ( we chose the latter option, Raro has a shitload of undercover cops cruising around ) and you try the beer while he talks about it. That in itself is a good little earner as there was only two other blokes on our tour but as it wound up about twenty or so turned up for the next one. I bought the obligatory T shirt as well.

One issue he has is the fact that their beer is completely natural and free of preservatives. This makes it taste fantastic, unfortunately the flipside of that is that Restaurants there will buy it, store it in a warm cellar for a few weeks and by the time they chuck it in the fridge it's gone off unlike mainstream shit which lasts for ages ( apparently Raro imports a lot of expired Corona, Heinie, Speights, Tui etc )
-

I bought a sixer of this on the weekend. And it was shit. When did they remove all the flavour? Fuck Monteiths.
-

As I've pointed out numerous times SHE is the one from the Hutt. I'm from one of Wellingtons nicer areas. If you're gonna have a go at me please try and get it right at least.

In terms of Montys I agree, they were neck and neck with Macs years ago but the latter has well and truly overtaken them. Montys Pils, Red and Black were nice posh "craft" beers for me back in the early 2000s but I rarely touch them now. I suspect being brought by DB has a lot to do with this.

Had a Panhead Stout last night, by fuck it is a magnificent drop.
-

so you're a wannabe Hutt boy? that's worse!

That's why you, like Roger Farelly on the Rock, are the "Big Dog" on the fern which whilst impressive here impresses a grand total of absolutely no one in real life.
-

no no, you need a smaller pond. I am, by far and away, the best poster on the Fern currently living in Cairns
-

Best place I have found in Auckland for craft beer is 16tun - over 120 craft beers, with some pretty good ones on tap too. A great range of 8wired, which is my favourite craft brewer

I find 16 tun a bit soulless TBH Beer Cooperative on corner of Victoria and Nelson (used to be Tabac) feels more like a pub but The Beer Spot in Northcote beats both.

The guy that owns the Avaiki Pearl shop opposite Wigmore's in Vaimaanga is the owner of Matutu's older bro. Just rock up to the brewery and say his brother told you to pop in and say hello and you don't pay tour prices and get a good deal on takeaways.

Gotta try the distillery up the road too. Set in the bush the guy that runs it looks like hair bear but he's generous to a fault and will ply you with his vanilla vodka and chilli vodka etc and then when you try and buy some say that he's got none for sale.

Last time I saw him at the market he gave me a free bottle as a repeat customer - even though I didn't buy anything.

Gotta love Raro.
-

I like 16tun. Just gets more corporate types.

Beer Cooperative is great as is Vultures Lane. Brew on Quay is OK, but not as good I reckon.

Went to Beer Spot at the weekend. Sensational - and what a great business model. No fit out costs, no kitchen, people just rock up and drink beer from forty freaking taps. 40!

Also a shout out to Galbraiths - their food has come on to a level that my wife (a harsh critic previously) is actually keen to eat there. it's the grand pappy of brewing in Auckland
-

Beer Spot has only recently doubled in size. I was there at weekend too - reading the fern....

They do everything as take outs too. It's a good option for me as I walk down and back which is about 7kms so I can kid myself I'm not overindulging. The food truck idea is a real winner.

BBC in highbury is a good option if you're over that way although it gets quite crowded and they have fewer guest beers as their own range expands
-
@pakman said in Beer thread:
Always in Matakana when I get back to Godzone. Is Sawmill Brewery still in form?
Yes.
The Leigh one still good for beer and live music, and this was packed last weekend (although I didn't go in):http://www.thedenizen.co.nz/gastronomy/new-opening-sawmill-brewery/#

Heading down to the brilliantly named "The Third Eye - Tuatara's Temple of Taste" tonight with a mate to sample their latest goodies. Among them we'll be trying a "Pumpkin Ale" a 'G n T Sour" "Oatmeal Stout" and "Heather Lives on".
Will give a full report tomorrow.
